Qualcomm Reportedly Sounding Out Samsung Foundry for Use
- Qualcomm is developing the 'Snapdragon 8 Elite 2' under the project name 'Kaanapali'.
- The Kaanapali project is being developed in two versions: a basic version and a 'Kaanapali S' version.
- The basic version of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, to be unveiled this September, is planned to be produced using TSMC's 3nm process.
- However, the Kaanapali S is currently undergoing testing for production with Samsung Electronics' foundry 2nm process.
- The Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 produced by Samsung Electronics Foundry is understood to be for Samsung Electronics' 'Galaxy S26 series' smartphones, to be launched early next year.
- Testing is underway with a schedule to complete mass production preparations in the second half of this year and enter mass production from the first quarter of next year.
- Qualcomm is also testing a semiconductor project named 'Trailblazer' using Samsung Electronics' 2nm process.
- Trailblazer is presumed to be a CPU for supercomputers or an automotive semiconductor, not a mobile AP.
- Samsung's 2nm yield recorded approximately 30% in trial production early this year and recently surpassed 40%.
- Several large customers are considering Samsung Electronics as an alternative to TSMC, whose prices are surging.
