Google changes its rules for the Android and Google Play in India

Google was recently fined $161m by India's anti-trust watchdog, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for alleged abuse of its market position and "unfair" business practices. Google challenged the CCI's ruling in the Supreme Court, but the court rejected the appeal.

To comply with the local laws, Google has decided to introduce these following changes:

• OEMs will be able to license individual Google apps for pre-installation on their devices.

• Indian users will now have the option to choose their default search engine via a choice screen when setting up a new Android smartphone/tablet.

• The Android compatibility requirements will have changes for partners to build non-compatible or forked variants.

• Making user choice billing available to all apps and games starting next month. Developers can offer users the option to choose an alternative billing system when purchasing in-app digital content.

• Improving Android's installation flow and auto-updating capability for sideloaded apps and app stores while ensuring users understand the potential security risks.

• Expanding online resources like help articles & FAQs to provide more information on Google Play services and when fees is applicable.

Google said it will continue to appeal the CCI directions with the case being heard by a lower court, which is expected to give a ruling before the end of March. But it’s going ahead with the changes to comply with the land of the law.
