Google advises all Android users to update Instagram app to fix battery drain

On the Android Help Community, Google told users to update Instagram to “fix a battery drain issue on Android devices.”

Starting today, Instagram is rolling out an updated app that should fix a battery drain issue on Android devices. Please make sure you have the latest version of the Instagram app (build 382.0.0.49.84) to resolve this issue.

Google has not provided any other details about the problem, including whether a particular manufacturer (Pixel, Samsung, etc.) or Android OS version is impacted, thus indicating this a widespread enough issue.

Imagine making an app so sh*t that Google had to jump in 😭

⚙️ The dual shade implementation for the quick settings is not gone yet!

Previously, a quick settings implementation containing two separate pages, one for the setting tiles and one for the notification shade, was shown as a work-in-progress replacement for the old style.

Fast forward a few weeks of work, especially after the introduction of the new expressive design, Google is taking the steps of Xiaomi and Samsung and letting the user choose between two different styles for checking their notifications and toggling settings.

This new page contains a switch to change between the "combined" style of quick settings and the "separated" one. The former is the one we have known since forever, while the latter is the dual-shade implemented previously leaked.

As seen in the video, this "switching" implementation is anything but finished; combined quick settings resemble the aspect of previous Android versions, while the separated one is buggy and does not react well to additional content present on the pages. Although, the expressive blur is omnipresent, making this early look still fresh.

This feature was initially found in the beta for Android 16 QPR1, but we expect it to be finished for way after it instead. What do you think of this approach, similar to the famous skins on the phone market?

The component is built using React Native — a framework known for its cross-platform flexibility but criticized for inefficiency in system-level applications.

This revelation has reignited discussions around software optimization and resource management in modern operating systems. Notably, legendary game developer John Carmack recently weighed in on a related topic during a discussion dubbed the "CPU Apocalypse" thought experiment.

Carmack, former CTO of Oculus and co-founder of id Software, argued that software inefficiencies - not hardware limits - are the real bottleneck in computing today. He suggested that if the development of new processors were to stall, market forces would push for significantly more optimized software, enabling older hardware to perform far better than currently expected.

Germany eyes 10% digital tax on Tech Giants

Germany is exploring a 10% digital tax on major online platforms like Google and Meta. The Culture Minister of State Wolfram Weimer said that these corporations do "billions in business in Germany" but do not pay taxes or contribute to the country. A legislative proposal is being drafted.

Weimer has also accused these platforms of building "monopoly-like structures," restricting competition and risking freedom of expression. This could heighten trade tensions with U.S., as President Trump opposes such measures.

XRING is Xiaomi's independently self-developed mobile processor for smartphones, watches , tabs etc.

Clocked at 1.795GHz
• Self - developed 6-core NPU
• Self - developed 4th Gen ISP

• 109mm² die size

XRING O1 has no SLC. But, there is 16MB of L3 shared between all 10 cores, 2MB L2 each for the X925 cores and 1MB L2 for each of the A725 cores. The GPU has 4MB of cache while the NPU has 10MB cache & offers 44 TOPS. The XRING image shows that it got engravings in the same design as Huawei's Kirin chip which means....

MediaTek Dimensity 9400 also has G-925 Immortalis GPU but with 12 cores. However, in reality XRING consumes more power & thus heats a lot as well. In short, GPU is inefficient.

Audit alarm rings for Oppo and Realme India due to negative net worth and missing records

Auditors of the Oppo IN and Realme IN have flagged multiple concerns regarding their bookkeeping, processes, and incomplete records, according to Registrar of Companies (RoC) filings.

Oppo Mobiles India, the third-largest smartphone brand, was flagged for having a negative net worth of ₹3,551 crore (~ $390 Million) as of FY24, driven by accumulated business losses from previous years.

The auditor also noted an adverse debt-equity ratio and significant external borrowings, including ₹1,668 crore from its parent and ₹414 crore from HSBC Bank. Current borrowings were at ₹2,085 crore.

With Realme, the auditor was not able to “obtain sufficient & appropriate audit evidence regarding the accuracy of purchase of traded goods recorded in the statement of profit and loss due to unexplained purchase price variances, auto approved system generated purchase orders and unverified goods receipt notes”.
