Dear all,
Just a reminder that registration is now open for the Simons-Emory Workshop on Neural Dynamics, which will livestream on Friday, December 4th from 11am-2pm EST.
"What could neural dynamics have to say about neural computation, and do we know how to listen?"
Please go here to register [1].
Speakers will deliver focused 10-minute talks, with periods reserved for broader discussion on topics at the intersection of neural dynamics and computation. The website for the event is here [2]
The workshop will assume familiarity with Vyas et al., Ann Rev Neuro 2020 [3]. Please review before attending.

Symmetry Breaking in Space-Time Hierarchies Shapes Brain Dynamics and Behavior
In order to maintain brain function, neural activity needs to be tightly coordinated within the brain network. How this coordination is achieved and related to behavior is largely unknown. It has been previously argued that the study of the link between brain and behavior is impossible without a guiding vision. Here we propose behavioral-level concepts and mechanisms embodied as structured flows on manifold (SFM) that provide a formal denoscription of behavior as a low-dimensional process emerging from a network’s dynamics dependent on the symmetry and invariance properties of the network connectivity....

Everything you did and didn't know about PCA
Many scientists are familiar with organizing and handling data in 2D tables. For example, we might record the mRNA expression level of
p genes in n
tissue samples. We might store these data in a n×p
matrix, where each row corresponds to a sample, and each column corresponds to a gene. Principle components analysis (PCA) is a standard way to reduce the dimension
p (which can be quite large) to something more manageable.
