Initiative Q is an attempt by ex-PayPal guys to create a new payment system instead of payment cards that were designed in the 1950s. The system uses its own currency, the Q, and to get people to start using the system once it's ready they are allocating Qs for free to people that sign up now (the amount drops as more people join - so better to join early). Signing up is free and they only ask for your name and an email address. There's nothing to lose but if this payment system becomes a world leading payment method your Qs can be worth a lot. If you missed getting bitcoin seven years ago, you wouldn't want to miss this.

The Way You’re Currently Sitting Reveals Everything About Your Personality
Even if your job doesn’t require you to spend a lot of time behind a desk, there’s a good chance that you spend a lot of time sitting on the couch, at the kitchen table, or in a comfy arm chair.
While sitting for too long can have some adverse side effects on our health and well-being (be sure to stand or walk for 10 to 20 minutes every hour!), there’s something about sitting that few people realize…
The way you sit actually says a lot about your personality!

These mini-lectures are designed around a class that I occasionally teach, as well as my book Analyzing Neural Time Series Data: Theory and Practice (2014, MIT Press). Each lecture is between ~5 and ~30 minutes, although some are longer because the material is more complex. My lecture slides are not available for download, so please do not ask for them.

Introduction to Neuroimaging
Measuring in-vivo brain activity from humans is an extraordinary feat. What is Neuroimaging? and What can we learn about the brain using this technique?
In this section, we will provide an overview of the course and a very introductory overview of the different types neuroimaging and a few examples of different types of things we can do with BOLD fMRI.

We can define a neural network that can learn to recognize objects in less than 100 lines of code. However, after training, it is characterized by millions of weights that contain the knowledge about many object types across visual scenes. Such networks are thus dramatically easier to understand in terms of the code that makes them than the resulting properties, such as tuning or connections. In analogy, we conjecture that rules for development and learning in brains may be far easier to understand than their resulting properties. The analogy suggests that neuroscience would benefit from a focus on learning and development.

In the post, Dr. Isis describes a shocking encounter in graduate school when a mentor informed her that because she had no first author publications, she was seen as unproductive, and not a competitive contender for grants.

My first full-time permanent employment was at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill NJ, where the transistor had been invented 10 years earlier. Its six-person theoretical physics group had hired me as a Member of Technical Staff. My physics thesis written and approved, and all other Ph.D. requirements completed at Cornell University, I reported to work early in March 1958. A first half-day of employment was spent on administrative details. I joined a couple of theorists in the cafeteria for lunch, and then headed for my new office. Unpacking a few books and journals took an hour. A visit to the 5th floor stockroom produced some lined tablets, pencils, and a hand-held pencil sharpener. I sharpened several pencils.....
