The smartest men of the 19th and 20th centuries were conspiracy-minded, believed in great man theory, and so on. Today, barely a century later, the "smartest" men believe that history is a random progression of coincidences and reactions, controlled by mystical abstract forces.

We went from "powerful men of powerful lineages work together to attain and maintain power to mold society for their own ends" to mental gymnastic gobbledygook about Calvinism, capitalism, "the natural consequence of liberalism", "there is no conspiracy/plan", "actually, our rulers are powerless", and so on.

So, what changed? Obviously, at some point during the 20th century, one particular group of conspirators took control of the organs of influence (media, education, academia, etc.) and used them to spread propaganda and ideologies that divert attention away from their conspiratorial machinations.
