Monkeypox Context

Monkeypox in not endemic to Europe yet, and cases have been rising and reported in media, 336 in the UK at the time of writing with the first case detected just over 1 month ago on May 11th 2022. There have also currently been no deaths from Monkeypox infections in Europe at the time of writing.

To put this outbreak in context listed below are some pre-COVID numbers on various infectious diseases, particularly those which are sexually transmitted or imported through mass migration:

The Public Health England report on STIs referenced in the article also lists that in 2019 there were a total of 258,904 cases of Chlamydia and 8,738 cases of Syphilis.

Additionally, according to Public Health England 4,704 people were notified with Tuberculosis during 2019, an increase compared to the the previous year (2018: 4,655, +1.1%). Surprisingly, although before 2022 there had only been 8 cases of Lassa Fever since 1980 (all imported from West Africa), in February of this year the UK reported 3 cases of Lassa fever including one death. All 3 of these recent cases were associated with recent travel from Mali, West Africa.

Finally, in a 2020 Public Health England report on Antimicrobial Resistance: "an estimated 65,162 antibiotic resistant severe infections in 2019; equivalent to 178 new antibiotic resistant infections per day." (NB: Antimicrobial Resistance is a Leading Cause of Death Globally, In 2019, 1.27 million deaths were due to treatment-resistant infections | Science News (2022))
