It’s often said that no one who’s watched a loved one die in pain would oppose the Assisted Suicide Bill - but that simply isn’t true.

Many people have endured exactly that heartbreaking experience and still have serious, principled concerns about this legislation.

Lib Dems leader Ed Davey is one. Read his moving piece below.

He said: “I was nine when my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and 12 when they found secondary breast cancer in her bones… it’s precisely because of those years spent caring for Mum that I will be voting against it.

“As a liberal, I of course believe people should be free to make their own decisions about their lives. But I don’t think for many people that’s what we’d get under this new law. Instead, our focus should be on fixing the whole health and care crisis. So people get the care and control they deserve.”

“This ruling is definitive – the LTN was unlawful. The council has lost, has been denied permission to appeal, and must now face the consequences of what that means.

“At the top of that list is the £1 million in fines it issued while the unlawful scheme was in place.

“We now call on Lambeth Council to clarify whether it will refund those fines. This is not just about legality – it’s about fairness and public trust. If the law was broken, the money should be paid back.”
