Good God, what an awful state I was in!. I was so thoroughly sick and tired of my whole wretched life that I didn’t find it worth my while to go on fighting in order to hang on to it. The hardships had got the better of me, they had been too gross; I was so strangely ruined, nothing but a shadow of what I once was.
