Pirates had the most socially advanced culture in history. They needed you to be a loyal person, and useful to your community. No one cared if you were male, female, homosexual, black, disabled, you name it. Pirates literally freed oppressed people and gave them the chance to join them and fight the governments. They gave freedom to slaves, free health care to whoever needed it, equal rights for gay people and women.
"They were cruel and violent", you might say. Wrong. We're speaking of a time when death penalty and torture were not only legal everywhere but also common practice, you could be enslaved for your entire life for stealing some food for your family, you could be easily be executed for something you didn't even do. War was absolutely normal, so men would be usually taken from their homes and families to serve as soldiers, and they had no choice. And even when military service was a choice (because the salary was good, so it was worth risking your life instead of living in extreme poverty and hunger) there was a lot of violence, a lot. Also, let's not forget all the slavery, corruption, horrible working conditions, lack of rights for women and minorities, violence towards children, and marginalization of disabled people. So no, pirates were never the bad guys. Also consider this: they were anarchists, not punishers. They were more likely to hire people rather than kill them, because they needed manpower to fight. If pirates won, if they managed to survive and rule, modern society would have progressed SO MUCH FASTER.
