I am writing to express deep concern over X’s spineless response to a shocking executive order from the Indian government, demanding the blocking of over 8,000 accounts. These include accounts belonging to international news outlets and prominent users. What’s most troubling is that in many of these cases, the government did not explain what posts allegedly violated the law, nor did it provide any evidence or justification. Yet, X complied with these demands and began blocking the accounts. This is a direct attack on freedom of speech and goes against X’s stated commitment to open dialogue.
If @X felt it had no choice but to follow the government's orders and block these accounts, then why wasn’t this possibility clearly mentioned in your platform’s terms and conditions? If users had known their accounts could be blocked without reason or evidence, many may have chosen not to join at all. Quietly agreeing to such actions is not only deceptive, but it is also a complete betrayal of user trust.
I strongly urge you to immediately reinstate all the blocked accounts and legally and policy-wise challenge the Indian government's arbitrary orders. Additionally, users who had their accounts blocked should be fully refunded for their premium subnoscriptions. That’s the least X can do after surrendering to government pressure instead of standing up for user rights.
Swift action on this matter is expected.
Free speech and user trust are at stake, and silence or inaction from X is simply unacceptable.
