According to Bloomberg, citing an official statement from Chancellor Karl Nehammer's office, the reason for this is the reduction in gas supplies from Russia
✍️"The government and Verbund (Austria's largest electricity supplier) have agreed to retrofit the currently inoperable Mellach CHP plant in order to restart coal-fired power generation in case of emergency," the paper's reporters "cheerfully" informed
💁♂️They stated that the country's gas reserves currently meet only 39 per cent of its annual consumption. As for the combined heat and power plant, it was essentially turned into a research centre for hydrogen fuel research after being shut down as part of a European plan to phase out coal power.
