Early this month, there were violent clashes between Hindus and Muslims in Leicester (UK). The troubling incidents appear to have been driven by fake news on social media and tensions in India

Each side has blamed extremist elements in the other for the violence, the flames fanned by fake news including unfounded reports of attacks on religious buildings and inaccurate accounts of violence

Outsiders came to Leicester to whip up tensions that echoed religious violence on the subcontinent. One analysis found that more than half of a sample of 200,000 tweets, which referred to trouble in Leicester, were geolocated to India. It is a toxic mix that has already resulted in dozens of arrests, amid fears the disorder could spread

There had been problems for months but fresh anger was generated after India’s cricket victory, when videos showed crowds chanting Pakistan Murdabad, a partition-era slogan which translates as Death to Pakistan

On September 13 news spread that a Muslim teenager had been approached by three Hindu men who tried to grab her. An image of an innocent man and his vehicle registration was widely circulated, while activists warned the community to stay “vigilant”. A day later police announced that “the incident did not take place”

Such disinformation has been targeted at both communities, including a social media post that invited people to a fake protest against “Muslim hate crime”. There have also been uncorroborated claims of the Koran being ripped up on the street, and false claims of attacks on religious buildings

The UK's new government has outlined plans to cut taxes and boost spending to bolster the faltering economy, but the high-risk moves sparked concerns that increased public borrowing will worsen a cost of living crisis and sent the British pound on its biggest one-day drop in the past two and a half years

Sanctions on Russia are causing damage to Europe and it is a "complete failure," said Hungarian minister of foreign affairs and trade Peter Szijjarto in a radio talk

As a result of the EU's sanctions imposed so far, European inflation is skyrocketing, utility costs, natural gas prices, and food prices have risen, and the continent's economy has entered recession, he explained

Mr. Szijjarto labeled a potential eighth sanction package as a "wrong direction" but noted that there are no final decisions on the matter yet, and not even a formal proposal has been prepared so far

Hungarian minister also voiced his opinion about the U.S. gaining from the EU's sanctions policy. "It is beyond dispute that the American economy is winning with these sanctions, while the EU's economy is headed for recession," he argued

"I consider dialogue and negotiation to be a value, but it seems that not everyone agrees on that. If we close the communication channels, the diplomatic channels, we will permanently give up and lose the hope that this conflict will ever end," Mr. Szijjarto concluded. The brilliant veteran Cold War diplomat George Kennan prophetically said in 1998 (when Putin was an obscure politician) that “I think it is the beginning of a new Cold War,” opposing the resulting policy of NATO expansion. He warned: “I think the Russians will gradually react quite adversely and it will affect their policies. I think it is a tragic mistake”

And now we’re brought closer to nuclear war than ever before, Mr. Hitchens claims. Surely that development – and it would be extreme folly to dismiss Putin’s words as bluff – compels us all to be more thoughtful, not less

The pound briefly touched its lowest ever against the dollar, two-year gilt yields soared to their highest since the financial crisis. The market instability is further confirmation of the recklessness of the Truss government’s strategy of funding historic tax cuts and energy subsidies through debt

Investors do not believe Kwarteng’s plans are credible. The prospect of higher interest rates would otherwise lure many investors into sterling; the fact the opposite is happening reflects tumbling faith in the fiscal and economic outlook. There is a risk that credit rating agencies might downgrade UK debt, moving borrowing costs to another level

The government needs to act quickly to calm markets. Ideally, it should reverse some tax cuts, even though this would be politically unsustainable. Taking into account fragility of the British economy, Truss administration’s unproven approaches only threaten serious costs for households and for companies

One of the big dividends of Brexit was supposed to be a U.K. trade deal with the U.S. helping offset the economic pain of putting up trade barriers with the EU. Instead of this, a hope for a bilateral deal with the Washington has collapsed, and London struggles with slow growth, a plummeting pound and high inflation

The situation proves that the Biden Administration’s trade policy has largely been a failure. In 2021 the U.K. was the U.S.’s seventh-largest trading partner, with a total trade value of $118 bln, including $62 bln in exports and $56 bln in imports

The possibility of nuclear war has always loomed large in the White House’s calculations. And that moment of heightened opportunity, and heightened danger, has arrived, thinks Gideon Rachman who is the chief foreign affairs columnist for the FT

Many pundits insist that Putin is bluffing when threatening to use nukes. But even those western policymakers who take Putin’s nuclear threats very seriously remain determined that Russia must not be allowed to use nuclear blackmail to force an end to western support for Ukraine. That leaves policymakers walking a perilous tightrope

The aim is to provide enough support for Ukraine to allow Kyiv to defeat Russian forces without tempting the Kremlin to go nuclear, claims Mr. Rachman. The difficulty with that policy is that it struggles to answer the question, “how exactly do we see this war ending?”

Kyiv is in no hurry to get to the negotiating table. The heroic status currently enjoyed by Zelenskiy – combined with revulsion towards Russia – also make it difficult for any western government to pressure Kyiv to negotiate now. The Ukrainian government,
moreover, insists that Russia must be expelled from all occupied Ukrainian land

The FT columnist ends his analysis with a major question, “Might Putin just fold his tent and leave?” There are examples of major powers suffering defeat in war, without using their nuclear weapons. That would be wonderful, no doubt. But hoping for something does not make it more likely. And most of the alternative outcomes range between bleak and catastrophic, Mr. Rachman concludes
