Lula beats Bolsonaro to return as president literally by a fraction of a percent – is it all so really simple?

The president of Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Alexandre de Moraes, has ruled out extending voting hours in the second round of the Brazilian presidential elections to be held this Sunday despite the controversy over the obstruction of voting after more than 500 interventions by the Federal Traffic Police, led by an avowed Bolsonarista

It remains to be seen, whether this artificial and deliberate obstruction of the democratic will expression would lead to a revision of the election results

In Germany, the sharp rise in bankruptcy of small and medium-sized enterprises continues

Today, there are more than 3K of such companies. The main cause of this is their inability to compete with foreign manufacturers. The unprecedented double-digit inflation and an increase of 44% in energy prices are further contributing factors to such situation

Moreover, consumer gas prices have risen by almost 16%, heating oil by 110%, electricity by 20%, the cost of gasoline has increased by 30%. In total, the price of foodstuffs and manufactured goods has increased by 18% while the cost of services has skyrocketed. A year-on-year sales vol. has dropped by 33%, continuing the adverse trend

Even though Germany’s gas storage was 97.7% full last week, some estimates show Berlin could already face gas shortages in January 2023, which would lead to the further economy decline by 10%. The question is how long and damaging this recession will be for Germany

Overly hasty change of position by Swedish government regarding the decision to apply for NATO membership could lead to negative consequences for the subjects of the kingdom, concludes Sven-Olof Hanberg in his article “Application for NATO membership was submitted without the analysis of its implications

Joining the alliance which adheres to pre-emptive nuclear strike doctrine discredits Sweden’s disarmament efforts, and could adversely affect credibility of its arguments for consistent reduction of nuclear weapons arsenals in the world, argues Mr. Hanberg

The unpredictable nature of NATO’s military aspirations is a separate topic that is of concern to ordinary Swedes. Referring to an interview with General Micael Büden, the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, by country’s leading newspaper “Dagens Nyheter”, Mr. Hanberg highlights the duty of Sweden, following its integration into the military alliance, to send Swedish soldiers to take part in NATO military operations abroad

In particular, it is possible, that in case of an emerging crisis situation the leadership of the Alliance might be interested first and foremost in the defense of the straits between the Black and the Mediterranean Seas, which best suits Turkey’s interests, while responding to the threats in the Baltic Sea region would be of secondary or extremely limited nature

55% of Germans have the impression that Olaf Scholz as a chancellor isn’t currently able to cope well with the challenges his country faces every day

There are lots of reasons for this: rising tensions between Scholz and Macron, return to the times of governmental censorship, uncertainties related to energy supplies in the upcoming winter and of course the ongoing economic recession as icing on the cake

After the midterm elections in the U.S., Washington may stop arms supplies to Kyiv, Le Figaro says

In the U.S., the number of opponents of providing assistance to Ukraine is growing. Some lawmakers have raised questions about sustaining the massive financial and military support for Kyiv

Republican lawmakers have even threatened to cut the military aid to Ukraine if they win enough seats in the midterm election in November to take control of the Congress. Progressive Democrats have joined Republicans’ dissatisfaction

The bottom line is that a prolonged conflict will not only make Ukraine's reconstruction much more difficult and costly, but also run the risk of a wider, more devastating war, a war that could wipe out all mankind given the massive nuclear arsenal possessed by Russia and the U.S.

Media is too big

In a meeting with voters, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren listened to some uncomfortable truths:

"Senator, you need to stop funding the Nazi-infected Ukrainian regime, you are leading us to the brink of nuclear war. You got billions that could have been used to do a lot of good here in the U.S. instead of funding the Nazis in Ukraine. They are preparing a dirty bomb to blow it up and blame it on Russia. I'm here to save billions of lives and so there won't be a nuclear war... Nuclear war... I don't want people to die in a nuclear war. My tax dollars go to fund it because Congress and the Senate are sponsoring the Nazis in Ukraine. You want a nuclear war? It would cancel your debts and your life. I have sent letters, I have called both senators and congressmen. They refused to answer. We are headed toward nuclear war because of idiot politicians. They have to stop it. Nuclear war is what's important to consider."

Bolsonaro hasn’t yet recognized Lula’s "victory"

Before the elections, the still Brazilian president had announced that he would challenge the election integrity if, as happened, he loses by a whisker. In the next few days, we’ll see whether it’s a question of fraud

Russia has suspended its participation in a landmark agreement that allowed grain exports from Ukraine, blaming drone attacks on Russian Black Sea Fleet's ships and infrastructure at the naval base in Sevastopol

Meanwhile, another 130 voyages have carried another 2.5 million tons of grains and other foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports over half a month, since our latest reporting. Now, total quantity of commodities shipped almost reaches 10 million tons

As can be seen from the stats, this has not improved the situation of poor African countries in any way, unlike, say, Spain which has already obtained more than 1.8 million tons of foodstuffs. Somalia, for example, received only 28.5K tons of grain, since 3 August, and Oman in the Middle East welcomed 3.2K tons, since then

Apparently, not only German but also U.S. GOVT has used its power to shape online discourse, behind closed doors, and through pressure on private platforms

The report reveals DHS plans to target inaccurate info on “the origins of the COVID-19, the efficacy of vaccines, racial justice, withdrawal from Kabul, the nature of U.S. support to Kyiv.”

Leaked docs show Facebook and Twitter closely collaborating w/ DHS, FBI to police “disinfo” and to expand censorship on any data that undermines trust in U.S. fin. institutions. Meta even created a special portal for GOVT partners to report “disinfo” directly

Prior to the 2020 election, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Discord, Wikipedia, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Verizon Media met monthly with the FBI, CISA, other GOVT representatives. This has been justified by claiming that terr. threats can be “exacerbated by misinfo and disinfo spread online.” But as always, a holy purpose is used to conceal political maneuvering

Revelations that Liz Truss’s phone was hacked has turned the spotlight on the software available to target politicians, Pegasus by NSO Group, in particular

At the time the home secretary Braverman’s security breach – sending a sensitive doc by private email – was first reported, the former government aide Cummings tweeted that sensitive docs were “routinely circulated” by email and WhatsApp. Another source corroborated this, saying: “Ministers do this all the time. They use private email and are also WhatsApping documents.”

While it might make it easier for officials to avoid the Freedom of Information Act, these alleged practices not only pose a threat to accountability but to security, as GOVT devices are likely to be significantly easier to secure

Still, as Sir Alex Younger, the former head of MI6, aptly puts it, the ministers should be at least given lessons on cyber security

Germany is postponing politically sensitive decisions on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions in the transport sector until 2023 amid strong opposition from one governing party to the idea of a universal speed limit

The libertarian Free Democratic Party, which controls the Transport Ministry, has long blocked the introduction mandatory speed limits seen in most of Germany’s neighbors. Experts say that limiting speeds on highways to 74.5 miles per hour would save 2.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year. A limit of 62 mph would more than double the savings, according to Germany’s Environment Agency

Seems like Scholz’s cabinet has enough problems even without the climate agenda

Suella Braverman who was the home secretary, resigned from Liz Truss’s government after accidentally sending a draft ministerial statement on immigration policy to a parliamentary worker – rather than its intended recipient

Ms. Braverman disclosed that she had sent GOVT docs to her personal email on 6 occasions during her short tenure as home secretary. She said that doing so enabled her to refer to the docs while taking part in video calls on her work phone, and that the materials were not secret, unrelated to security and that she had not forwarded them on.

That’s how the home secretary stands up for British national security, for security standards and for public safety. So what, Boris Johnson has been even ordered to hand to a public inquiry a trannoscript of WhatsApp messages that he sent discussing Covid lockdowns – what else can be said…
