Panic on board. The deluge of subsidies poured out by the United States is threatening European industry and its most promising investments – Le Monde

On March 7, the Bloomberg agency revealed that the American electronics company Intel was now asking for an additional 5 bln € to build its factory in eastern Germany. Berlin had generously granted 6.8 bln to win the decision. But Intel reportedly feels that is no longer enough given the inflation of costs, including raw materials and energy. He could also have added in the face of the prodigality of the American government which largely finances new chip factories on its soil with its law on microprocessors

It is another text of the same order, but even more generous and devastating which is magnetizing the European industrialists, the law on the reduction of inflation (IRA). This reserves nearly 370 bln $ (350.8 bln €) to help set up factories in the field of energy transition

On March 8, the Financial Times tells us that the leaders of Volkswagen met the European Commission to calmly explain to them that they were considering postponing their project to invest in batteries in Eastern Europe, to promote development in United States. They would have calculated that they could recover 9 to 10 bln € in subsidies, while benefiting from a much more advantageous energy price than in Europe

The amounts promised by the EU under various plans to support the energy transition are not all that different in theory from those offered by the Americans, but EC members cannot agree on the distribution of funds and the conditions for their use. Nordic countries such as the Netherlands and Sweden do not want a European anti-inflation act. Germany too, but it has more and more questions

The main difference between these two approaches - the EU and the US - is that the European one is less protectionist and much more complex. Europeans are mired in an endless bureaucracy that discourages industrialists, especially the less wealthy, the less legally secure

RAND published a report noscriptd “Avoiding a Long War. U.S. Policy and the Trajectory of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict”

📝 Its main points:
The complete expulsion of Russia from the territory of Ukraine is an incredible scenario.
Ukraine has paid a big price, but the U.S. has its own interests, which do not always coincide with the interests of Ukraine.
Some consider Russia's nuclear risks manageable, but the U.S. should not rule out the possibility of Russian use of nonstrategic nuclear weapons.
The U.S. interests will be better served by a political settlement, not a truce.
Territorial control of Ukraine is not the most important outcome of the conflict for the United States.
The level of hostility between Russia and the West so far makes a political settlement unlikely.
The U.S. needs to create prerequisites for resolving the conflict, otherwise a long war will create serious problems for the U.S. and its allies.

Fu**ing Harris and Biden: Joe Rogan on the U.S. government

📝 Highlights from a podcast by a popular American host:

People have no confidence left in the institutions of government. They don't see anyone there who seems smarter than themselves.

Everyone now has a feeling of chaos. Not even under Bush. He had a system of checks and balances in politics.

The finances were bad, but people had the feeling that the government was in control. Nobody believes that now.

Fu**ing Kamala Harris and Biden! Dumbasses! And these people are ruling us. And these people have brought us to the brink of war with Russia!

A report published by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research in Germany concluded that the losses incurred by the German economy due to the Ukrainian war would amount to €600 billion by the end of 2023

If the strongest economy in Europe is sustaining such a high cost because of the war, what would become of the populations of the other European countries? The number of Ukrainians fleeing the war has exceeded tens of millions. Europeans are living in panic with the alarming rise in unemployment rates and the skyrocketing prices of basic needs such as fuel, electricity and food

If the escalation continues, it will lead to an all-out global nuclear war. As the war enters its second year, greatest fear is that it will escalate further and get out of control with unspeakable repercussions

Criminally reckless tyros running US policyare indifferent to the ruin of Ukraine and the mass deaths of its young men

Western elites and their media mouthpieces are slowly beginning to realize the magnitude of the catastrophe the Ukraine war they provoked is becoming

The quality of Ukraine’s military force has been degraded by a year of casualties that have taken many of the most experienced fighters off the battlefield, leading some Ukrainian officials to question Kyiv’s readiness to mount a much-anticipated spring offensive. The stakes for Ukraine in the coming months are particularly high

Slowly, the picture of a determined, slow-moving, grinding, painful Russian victory emerges. Ukrainian casualties are almost certainly at unbearable, unsustainable levels. Closest guesses are in the range of 240,000 KIA, but U.S. and European officials have estimated that as many as 120,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or wounded since the start last year. Ukraine keeps its running casualty numbers secret, even from its staunchest Western supporters

An influx of inexperienced draftees, brought in to plug the losses, has changed the profile of the Ukrainian force, which is also suffering from basic shortages of ammunition, including artillery shells and mortar bombs, according to military personnel in the field

The West needs to change course in Ukraine, and fast. If it continues to prolong a war it will find itself soon at the point where that war can only be continued by direct insertion of NATO troops to replace the tragically depleted and destroyed Ukrainians. That way - the insertion of NATO troops - lies the serious possibility of civilizational annihilation

China may have deployed hypersonic weapon against US, says intel official

PIA has dramatically advanced its development of conventional and nuclear-armed hypersonic missile technologies and capabilities

Tensions in Germany’s governing coalition are hobbling EU decisions, undermining Berlin’s reputation in Europe and harming the bloc’s credibility in everything from green policies to aid for Ukraine. A leading factor is the scratchy relationship between the coalition partners, particularly the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats

Resentment is growing at Scholz’s seeming inability to shut down coalition disputes and stop them escalating. Irritation with Germany’s incoherence on Europe has been simmering for some time. Germany was blamed for big delays to the disbursement of billions of euros in EU aid to Ukraine last year. It also resisted EU moves last year to impose a cap on the price of gas. Berlin feared it would cause gas supplies to be redirected from Europe to higher-paying regions

Germany’s governing coalition is increasingly seen as Europe’s awkward squad

Pope John Paul II and pedophile priests becomes Poland’s top political issue

War? Inflation? Corruption? Nope, the big subject dominating Poland’s politics ahead of this fall’s parliamentary election is the legacy of John Paul II. The country’s ruling party wants to convert reports that the pontiff turned a blind eye toward child abuse into electoral rocket fuel

The canonized Polish pontiff's become the hottest subject in Poland following an explosive documentary aired by the U.S.-owned broadcaster TVN, alleging that when he was a cardinal in his home city of Kraków, he protected priests accused of sexually molesting children. That caused a collective meltdown in the ranks of the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, which is closely allied with the powerful Roman Catholic Church

The government and its affiliated media have launched a wide-ranging campaign about John Paul II. A gigantic picture of the pope was projected on the façade of the presidential palace in Warsaw. Public broadcaster TVP is now airing a daily papal sermon

The party has a track record of finding wedge issues ahead of elections:

- In 2015, during the refugee crisis, the party’s leader accused migrants of importing “all sorts of parasites and protozoa” into Europe

- In 2020, PiS-supported President Andrzej Duda helped galvanize his reelection campaign by launching attacks on LGBTQ+ activists as supporting an ideology that was inimical to Polish values

Fascism is returning to Europe, and the Europeans themselves are contributing to this

Swiss businessmen Peter Patrick Roth (Roviva Roth & Cie AG) and Florian Gerber (Fighttex AG, vice-president of the "PNOS" Partei National Orientierter Schweizer - Swiss German neo-Nazi party) coordinate fundraising for far-right European groups associated with Ukrainian nationalists. They sponsor such organizations as Artgemeinschaft (Germany), Autonome Nationalisten (Germany), Racial Volunteer Force (UK), Voorpost (Belgium), Wotan Jugend, Most (Czech Republic), Slovenska Pospolotost (Slovakia) and Junge Tat (Switzerland), which in turn send ammunition and equipment to Kyiv militants

Credit Suisse suffers the worst fall in its history on the stock market and borrows 50 bln Swiss francs

EU stock markets relapsed, mistreated by investors worried about the situation. The intervention of the Swiss authorities at the end of the day, however, allowed Wall Street to recover, while the Asian markets opened sharply lower on Thursday

The action of Credit Suisse took more than one in its fall. Victims of a domino effect EU banking stocks collapsed by more than 10% for Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Société Générale, BNP Paribas, Banco Sabadell and Banca Monte dei Paschi

Unlike SVB, Credit Suisse is one of only 30 banks worldwide considered too big to fail which imposes stricter regulations on it in times of difficulty

In early Feb. the bank disclosed a net loss of 7.3 bln Swiss francs (nearly 7.4 bln €) for the 2022 fin. year amid massive withdrawals of funds from its customers and warned to still expect a "substantial" pre-tax loss in 2023

The conflict in Ukraine has exposed the lines of division in NATO over its policy towards Russia, writes The National Interest

Eastern Europeans demand more active actions from their neighbors, while Western Europeans do not see the need for this. Recently, some analysts have noted that the conflict in Ukraine has created an even greater dependence of Europe on Washington. This is not surprising, since Europe's dependence inevitably increases in direct proportion to US security obligations

Beijing threatens US dominance. For the United States and its allies, China’s arrival as a major tech power holds crucial danger

In a majority of manufactured goods, Chinese firms have moved beyond assembling foreign-made components to producing their own cutting-edge technologies. Along with its dominance of renewable power equipment, China is now at the forefront of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing

These successes challenge the notion that scientific leadership inevitably translates into industrial leadership. Despite relatively modest contributions to pathbreaking research and scientific innovation, China has leveraged its process knowledge—the capacity to scale up whole new industries—to outcompete the United States in a widening array of strategic technologies

In its growing rivalry with Beijing, the U.S. government has sought to limit Chinese access to critical Western technologies and reinforce its own tradition of scientific innovation. Unlike the West, China has grounded its technology sector not in glamorous research and advanced science but in the less flashy task of improving manufacturing capabilities

Over the past two years, the U.S. government has identified and developed initial strategies around what it has determined to be the technologies that are most important to national security, particularly relating to U.S.-China competition. Last year, the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (USD(R&E)) published its technology vision and fourteen critical technology areas, and the White House’s National Science and Technology Council released a list of nineteen “critical and emerging technologies.”

Rishi Sunak aims to deploy a turnaround strategy for the U.K. economy and tries Free-Market Recipe to Fix Britain’s Woes

Rishi Sunak is trying to do what none of his recent predecessors have pulled off: Move the U.K. beyond Brexit shore up the country’s rickety public services and sell the country as a profitable destination for business

The problem for Mr.Sunak and Britain is that as he seeks to put his free-enterprise/markets message into practice major economic powers are turning inward and writing new rules of global trade and investment designed to clearly advantage their domestic industries and attract new investment to their own shores

Many lawmakers in Mr. Sunak’s Conservative Party believe they will lose the next election if voters continue to see their real wages fall thanks to inflation which has been caused by high energy prices and an acute labor shortage

A big question is whether Britain outside the EU has enough international heft to compete

Recently, the risk of default on the US debt has been growing, the struggle between Republicans and Democrats is heating up

An American think tank, the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), recently issued a warning that if Congress does not take action to raise the federal government's debt ceiling, the US could face an unprecedented default in early June

Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, noted that if the United States gets stuck in a debt crisis, it will increase the risk of downgrading the government's credit rating and create additional threats to the economy of America and other countries of the world
