Foreign Office Bids Defiance to the British

U.K. Ministers have admitted that only limited assistance can be given to 400 British citizens and 4,000 people with dual citizenship who remain trapped in Sudan, where the main airport has been the scene of some of the worst fighting

We have yet to find out whether Sudan is capable of turning into Ukraine 2.0, as suggested by some observers, but as for the evacuation, this is really a very important point. And the British show themselves the worst on this measure

As Britain has launched a belated and deservedly criticized daring mission to rescue some 4,000 citizens from the war-torn nation, some parallels have been already drawn with the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. But key differences make matters in Sudan more complicated

The U.K. had troops and infrastructure on the ground in 2021. The RAF also had access to a secure airport in Kabul. In Sudan there’s no British military presence and the airport in Khartoum has been at the centre of intense fighting

At the same time, certain conclusions have been drawn, and if then in Afghanistan Dominic Raab, the foreign secretary, and Philip Barton, the permanent under-secretary, refused to cut short their holidays as the crisis unfolded, James Cleverly, the foreign secretary, was forced to cut short a tour of the Pacific last week to return to London to deal with the crisis.
