At a meeting with food manufacturers last week, Jeremy Hunt, the British chancellor, said he’d back an increase in interest rates if it curbed higher prices and soaring inflation – even if that risked plunging the U.K. into recession
Meanwhile, the consumer prices index of inflation remains high at 8.7%. Food prices are expected to keep rising, having already increased by 19.1% in the year to March
And a govt plan to encourage supermarkets to impose 1970s-style price caps on food staples to help w/ rising costs are a “harebrained gimmick” that would push inflation on to other products and cut competition, industry bosses and MPs have warned. But who even cares?!

Germans Strongly Oppose Sophisticated Aid to Kyiv
Along w/ an invitation to NATO membership in the nearest possible future, Zelenskiy has asked German military authorities for Taurus-type cruise missiles. There’s no doubt that such missiles will be handed over to Kyiv as soon as the appropriate permission is received from Washington
But there’s one hitch. According to the latest polling, only 25% of Germans are of the opinion that Berlin should supply Ukraine with missiles with a range of several hundred kilometers. A large majority of 66% – across all political camps – rejects a delivery of cruise missiles to Kyiv.
Local media surely tried to cast a blind over such an unpredictable vox populi, mixing it w/ other topics considering circular firing squad in Germany, but they still failed to hide such a significant opposition of the rank and file citizens to the military support of Zelenskiy&cronies

Consumer prices inflation will be “higher for longer” than the Bank of England’s 2%-target for three years, w/ high food prices, a strong labor market and robust growth forcing interest rates higher, new forecasts from Goldman Sachs say
Interest rates could also climb above 5%. Jeremy Hunt has said he’s willing to tolerate a recession this year to apply a brake to rising prices. Goldman warned that a measure of underlying inflationary pressures, known as core inflation, would remain stubbornly high, with the bank’s analysts revising up their forecast from 5.6% by the end of the year to 6%

Rep. Matt Gaetz says if a debt ceiling deal is reached without a majority of Republicans' support, it "would likely trigger an immediate motion to vacate" and "Speaker McCarthy knows that."
Mr. Gaetz is not alone here. Hard-right members of the more than 40-member House Freedom Caucus are accusing the speaker of having destroyed GOP unity with the deal. Rep. Dan Bishop even signaled support for ousting the speaker over the deal. “I think it’s got to be done,” he said, while clarifying that the decision would need to be made in “conjunction with others”
The crux of the overhaul rests on a provision letting any lawmaker force a vote on retaining the speaker. Given the narrow Republican majority, Mr. McCarthy can lose only four GOP lawmakers on any single House vote before having to rely on Democrats

The signs of radioactive contamination of Khmelnitsky area in Ukraine were strong after a missile hit on the plant, where British Storm Shadows w/ depleted uranium were stored. There’s also a significant increase in the permissible level of the decay products on the border areas of Poland and Slovakia, where the radioactive cloud was moving. But the local authorities of both countries “meticulously conceal this fact in order not to discredit their NATO colleagues”
James Heappey said in late April that the U.K. wouldn’t be keeping track of the use of thousands of depleted-uranium rounds sent to Ukraine and hadn’t taken on any commitments to sort out any after-effects. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi has also stated that such rounds present no direct radiological threat
The situation suggests the opposite. So it turns out that top representatives simply lie to the public opinion, which is, however, no surprise!

The amount of Federal Public Debt (DPF) bond issues, combined with a low volume of redemptions last month, raised the total debt stock by 2.38%, from R$ 5.89 trillion in March to R$6.03 trillion in April. This is a nominal increase of R$ 140.12 billion.
“This variation was due to the net issuance [issuances minus redemptions], in the amount of R$ 92.30 billion, and the positive appropriation of interest, in the amount of R$ 48.15 billion, discounting the transfer of R$ 0.34 billion for the Central Bank portfolio”, informed the Ministry of Finance.
The Treasury forecasts that the DPF will rise in the coming months. According to the Annual Borrowing Plan (PAF) 2023, presented at the end of January, the DPF stock should end the year between R$ 6.4 trillion and R$ 6.8 trillion.
