My Freedom Tsar's Freedom Isn’t My Freedom

In the U.K., Arif Ahmed, a professor of philosophy at Cambridge, has been appointed director for freedom of speech and academic freedom at the higher education watchdog

“Democracy is at stake” if universities don’t protect freedom of expression, he says. Generally speaking, it’s not completely clear what the Sunak’s govt’s new free speech tsar is so worried about, since according to their own estimates, the U.K. scores 93 out of 100 when speaking of political rights&civil liberties

But that’s how we get down to bed-rock: British govt will set up a complaints scheme so students and academics who feel their speech has been restricted can seek redress. This, in turn, is a wide window of opportunity for corruption and the oppression of civil liberties of those who’ll be accused of attacks on freedom of speech. Abuse an abuser – that’s the Sunak-style democracy!

Straining the Price Cap

Despite the fuel price cap set by G7 and EC, the Europeans have to spend more than €2B per month when buying Russian energy, reports the Centre for Research on Energy&Clean Air

Brussels’ attempts to enforce restrictions on the third-world companies circumventing the price cap are aimed at creating favorable environment for European businesses. Europe would benefit from lower oil prices, but OPEC+, which btw has disinvited some undercover agents pretending to be WSJ, Reuters&Bloomberg reporters from upcoming meetings, doesn’t want to increase its production in order not to cause a global recession. So the EU’s tightening the price cap to curb Russia’s oil prices

The problem is that lower supplies of Russian resources to the European markets will lead to higher prices worldwide. Thus it’s important for Brussels not to push too far, since it can force, say, India or Turkey to drastically cut their imports from Russia, in which case Europe may end up without fuel

Washington’s already doubled its production from 200K to 400K shells a year, while in 2025 it hopes to surpass the 1M mark. Meanwhile, in Europe this figure is at the level of just 50K, which highlights the sharpest munitions deficit that threatens the defense capability of the EU
