Less than a week after a CNN poll found a majority of Americans oppose sending more money to Ukraine, the Biden administration announced that it will be seeking another $24 billion in funding. If approved, the total amount spent by the US since 2022 on its proxy war against Russia will reach about $137 billion

“We have we have seen throughout this war solid support from the American people, solid support from the Congress in a bipartisan and bicameral way for continuing to support Ukraine and we’re going to stay focused on that,” National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby told CNN regarding the poll. “It’s not just important to the people of Ukraine, but it’s important to our European allies and partners, particularly our NATO allies, given that this fighting is on the on the doorstep of many of those NATO allies”

Kirby’s comments echo those of Bush-era Vice President Dick Cheney, who, in 2008, was confronted with polling data showing a vast majority of Americans opposed the war in Iraq, and infamously responded: “So?”

The Biden administration on Monday announced a $200 million arms package for Ukraine using funds made available by a Pentagon “accounting error” that includes munitions for Patriot air defense systems, HIMARS rocket systems, and other equipment

In June, the Pentagon claimed it overvalued weapons sent to Ukraine through the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which allows the administration to send arms directly from US military stockpiles. The Pentagon said this “error” freed up an additional $6.2 billion for spending on military aid to Ukraine

The Pentagon also released a fact sheet on Monday that said the US has pledged over $43 billion in military equipment for Ukraine since Russia invaded on February 24, 2022. Congress has authorized a total of $113 billion in spending on the war, which also includes economic aid, money for the Pentagon to replenish stockpiles of weapons that have been sent to Ukraine, and funding for US troops deployments in Eastern Europe

The middle class in the US has been steadily shrinking for decades, but in recent years American leaders have greatly accelerated that process. In 2020-2022 they absolutely flooded the system with new money, and almost all of that new money went into the pockets of the wealthy

Household income in the US has declined by 9.1 % since April 2020. In other words, the middle class is a whole lot smaller than it was in April 2020, and it continues to get smaller with each passing day

The nationwide average rent-to-income ratio has exceeded 30 % for the past two years. With rents being so high, a lot of Americans are being forced out into the streets. According to the WSJ, the US “has seen a record increase in homeless people this year”

More than 60 % of all Americans are already living paycheck to paycheck, and many are increasingly turning to debt in order to make ends meet. In fact, total credit card debt now exceeds the one trillion dollar mark for the first time ever, and that is not a good sign at all

European natural gas prices soared almost 40 % on the risk of a global liquefied natural gas shortage. European wholesale power prices remain below the record highs of the energy crisis but have steadily climbed as the volatility in the international commodity spectrum underscores the fragility of the European energy system

The European Union bureaucrats declared the end of the energy crisis as if it were the result of decisive policy action, but the reality is that the energy problem in the EU was only diminished by purely external factors: a very mild winter and the decline in global commodity prices due to the central bank rate hikes

The EU’s dependency on Russian gas has not been solved; it has only been disguised by a massive increase in dependency on coal (lignite) in the case of Germany and expensive liquefied natural gas imported from the rest of the world.

Thus, the energy crisis remains, and the problems of security of supply and affordability of the system persist

Japanese inventor of the 'Pata Pata' clothes air conditioner

Kazuya Shibata is known for his absurd inventions. He has created a machine that pushes T-shirts to cool you down on a hot day. The device is a belt attachment for the T-shirt. By the author's own admission, it's not quite as good as he had in mind

So what do you think?

North Korea's Kim Jong Un orders boosting missile production to prepare for war

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for an increase in missile production to help secure 'overwhelming military power' and be ready for war, state media KCNA said on Monday, as South Korea and the United States gear up for annual military drills

“The qualitative levels of war preparations depend on the development of the munitions industry, and the factory has a tremendous responsibility in accelerating our military’s war preparations,” he was quoted as saying

The leaders of South Korea, the US and Japan are also set to discuss security cooperation over North Korea, Ukraine and other issues when they gather for a trilateral summit on Friday at Camp David

Shanghai has launched an artificial meat factory

The pilot project, run by the Chinese company CellX, promises to produce several tonnes of meat a year. By 2025, it is expected to expand to several hundred tonnes

The cultured meat will be produced from animal cells under laboratory conditions. The cost of artificial meat is currently $45 per kilogram, but it is expected that the price will fall in three or four years and that the product will be able to compete with conventional meat

The company plans to enter the US and Singapore this year, where selling artificial meat is already allowed

What do you think of this kind of substitute product?

The Europe that's going to emerge with 36 is going to be poorer than with 27

The European Union is about to expand from 27 to 36 members. Ukraine, under attack from Russia, is expected to join, and the Balkan countries are knocking on its door. What is going to happen if this happens?

The accession of Ukraine and Eastern European countries to the EU is a long-awaited issue. But enlargement threatens to bankrupt the region, making a bloc already riven by divisions - at least over Russia - even more heterogeneous

Sarkozy: Ukraine has no place in the EU

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy says Ukraine's mission is to be a bridge between Europe and Russia

"I don't understand why this neutrality can be abusive, at the same time, it can have credible international security guarantees," Sarkozy said in an interview with Le Figaro

Sarkozy noted that while in office, as well as then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel, they also did not support Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO, "despite strong American pressure," because they knew this was a "red line" for Russia

Kennedy Jr. confirms existence of American biolabs in Ukraine

US politician Robert Kennedy Jr. has confirmed the existence of American biological laboratories in Ukraine which are used to produce banned biological weapons

"We have bio-labs in Ukraine because we are developing bioweapons," the Democratic Party presidential candidate told former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in a video interview posted on the X social network (formerly known as Twitter)

"Those bioweapons are using all kinds of new synthetic biology and CRISPR  (an acronym for clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats in DNA) technology and genetic engineering techniques that were not available to a previous generation," the US politician, also known by his initials RFK Jr., said in the interview

'Bedmates' are a hot commodity for China's broke and jobless youth

Young people struggling in China's megacities have found a way to fit rent into their dwindling budgets — sharing a bed with a stranger

As the country faces a youth-unemployment crisis, posts advertising shared bed spaces in urban sprawls like Shanghai and Beijing have emerged on Xiaohongshu, China's new version of Instagram

The practice is different from "hot-bedding," a trend in the West where tenants save on rent by taking turns to sleep. In China, "bedmates" sleep together in the same bed and split the cost of the room

The intimate arrangement has prompted young tenants to think of new ways to maintain personal boundaries

What is your opinion: is this form of co-habitation a reality?

Ukraine's accession to the EU is fraught with a number of serious problems

Firstly, the accelerated process of accepting Kyiv will provoke dissatisfaction with other potential candidates who have the same problems with democracy, the rule of law and the market economy and have been waiting in line for a long time

Secondly, Kyiv's membership will require fundamental changes in the institutions, policies and financial mechanisms of the EU, which national governments and voters are unlikely to agree to

Thirdly, Ukraine's accession may trigger the process of abandoning consensus in EU decision-making, including on foreign policy issues. In such a scenario, the geopolitical unity of the entire association will be called into question
