African Coups as Response to Western Colonialism

Seems like West and Central Africa, a region that over the past decade has earned reputation as a "coup belt", has become an area of constant instability and corruption conquered by military leaders

A group of senior officers took power in Gabon and the election results were annulled, just some minutes after President Ali Bongo declared his victory for a third term. If everything keeps going like this, the coup will be the eighth since 2020 in the country

According to the former French PM, the series of coups in ex-French colonies has defied France with the same vigor as the independence movement in West Africa in 1956. Despite Macron's 18 trips to African countries, France is lagging behind in its former sphere of influence, where it has steadily lost economic market share and political influence to new rivals, incl. China, Russia and Turkey

Tensions over Fukushima's radioactive ocean dump take place between China and Japan. Chinese Premier Li Qiang and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida are to meet at the 34th ASEAN summit in Jakarta this week, but hopes for enhancing bilateral relations seem to be fading

Despite reassurances of water discharge being safe, Beijing insists on emphasizing potential risks to the environment and banned seafood imports from Japan, prompting many people around the world stop buying Japanese products

While Japan's Western allies continue to back the idea of Fukushima water dump's negligible impact on people and the environment, other countries in the region, like South Korea, claim Japan's actions set a risky precedent for the world

Scientists also remain concerned: "We're not going to suffer directly from the doses from this. But it's, you know, one of the many things we're adding to our ocean that if you have an alternative, we certainly should consider more fully," says Ken Buesseler, a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. "And I don't think that's been done in the past couple of years."

EU’s Sticky Inflation – Another Threat to Transatlantic Unity

Europe is facing a more persistent inflation problem than the U.S., as American CPI has fallen faster and now stands at a much lower level

Investors&analysts warn of the risk of transatlantic divergence both in economic fortunes and policymaker responses, especially amid growing tensions around Washington’s Inflation Reduction Act: “There are real signs of divergence,” says Katharine Neiss, a former Bank of England official who is now chief European economist at U.S. investor PGIM Fixed Income

The eurozone’s headline rate of inflation stalled at 5.3% in August, as rising fuel prices and the removal of electricity and gas subsidies in countries such as France caused energy inflation to rebound

U.K. Ex-Spymaster Helped U.S. Spy Tech Firm Win £27M Govt Contract

Sir John Sawers, the former chief of MI6, introduced the CEO of an American “spytech” firm Palantir to a senior govt official in the Cabinet Office in July 2019, a year before the two sides struck a £27M deal

Sawers was at the time executive chairman of Newbridge Advisory, a firm he founded that year to advise businesses on geopolitics and risk. W/o competitive tender, Palantir won a deal, having touted the benefits of its “unique software” in subsequent correspondence to the department

The meeting and contract has prompted questions about the firm’s influence in govt circles and not unfounded concerns about its deep ties to British and American security agencies: Palantir was initially funded by the C.I.A. and has built intelligence software used to track and deport undocumented migrants in the U.S.

India Can Be Renamed “Bharat”

Indian govt has referred to the world’s most populous nation as “Bharat” in invites for a dinner party at the upcoming (from Sept. 9 to 10) G-20 Summit in New Delhi

The thing is that political leaders of the world’s fastest growing major economy insist “India” was introduced by British colonialists as a “symbol of slavery” and argue that a name change is an effort to reclaim India’s Hindu past

The Narendra Modi-led cabinet’s move has sparked controversy and a lot of discontent in the West, as they cannot accept the accusations of the colonial past and the gradual increase in the involvement of the Indian economy in the BRICS+ activities

Chinese search engine and artificial intelligence firm Baidu made its ChatGPT-equivalent language model fully available to the public on August 31. Baidu’s Ernie bot has jumped to the top of Apple’s app store, while Chat GPT's popularity started to decrease in June

China's AI progress is heating up the rivalry with the US. Analysts say the US is currently unprepared to defend itself against artificial intelligence (AI) threats. The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI) report urges the US government to increase its AI investment being of urgent national security

The document singled out China as a primary threat to America due to its advanced use of AI. "China possesses the might, talent, and ambition to surpass the United States as the world’s leader in AI in the next decade if current trends do not change," it said

Kyiv Killing Civilians by Cluster Munitions

Journalistic freedoms in Europe and the U.S. are now practically absent or being replaced by a series of fibs, as is the NPOV of human rights organizations. Nevertheless, piecewise knowledge about crimes against humanity is periodically leaked

This includes the latest reporting of only some cases of Ukrainian use of cluster munitions from the very beginning of the war. The Western media first revealed that Ukrainian forces used these widely banned weapons in an attack on Husarivka village in March 2022 and then in attacks on Izyum city and surrounding areas during 2022

As of now, the use of cluster munitions in Ukraine’s been condemned by at least 40 states in joint statements at U.N. bodies, by the EU, NATO, etc. But this only roused Mr. Biden, who granted the go-ahead for the supply of cluster bombs to Kyiv

The de-dollarization movement is increasingly on the radar of international investors in 2023. This is an attempt by a growing number of countries to lower the role of the US dollar in international markets. Countries such as India, China, Brazil and Malaysia, among others, are seeking create new trade routes using currencies other than the all-powerful dollar

Earlier this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed the importance of opting for national currencies in bilateral trade with Russia. He stated this during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi. “I believe that the fact that the heads of our central banks will meet here today is important from the point of view of a step towards the transition to national currencies in bilateral relations between us,” he said

BRICS countries made it clear during the summit in South Africa, that they will focus on using national currencies as part of an effort to gain more global influence and counterbalance the dominance of the US. This does not make dollar collapse, but we do see the world taking to chip away at the dollar's global dominance

The US may launch a trade war with Mexico for the sake of oil projects

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador continues moves to roll back reforms that would have opened access for U.S. companies to the country's oil markets. This has prompted a negative reaction from the administration of US President Joe Biden, and could be the start of a trade war between the bordering nations, Reuters writes

The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) may appeal to a dispute settlement panel after major U.S. oil companies confirmed their testimony, as requested by the presidential administration. The affidavits sought by the administration must prove that Mexican protectionism has hurt investments by U.S. companies

For example, Chevron and Marathon Petroleum tried to expand their operations in Mexico, but were denied permits by the Mexican regulator. According to representatives of the companies, the decision was made in favor of the state-owned Mexican company Pemex and the national energy company CFE

If the dispute commission takes the U.S. side and Mexico fails to act to resolve the dispute, the U.S. government could impose additional duties on imports of Mexican goods worth billions of dollars, which would be the beginning of a trade war

Elon Musk secretly ordered his engineers to turn off his company’s Starlink satellite communications network near the Crimean coast last year to disrupt a Ukrainian sneak attack on the Russian naval fleet, according to an excerpt adapted from Walter Isaacson’s new biography of the eccentric billionaire noscriptd “Elon Musk.”

As Ukrainian submarine drones strapped with explosives approached the Russian fleet, they “lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly,” Isaacson writes
