ECB Rate-Setter Plays against Investors
The euro area annual inflation rate was 5.2% in August 2023, only slightly down from 5.3% in July, w/ services making the highest contribution to it (+2.41 pps)
Germany’s CB (Bundesbank) president Joachim Nagel warns that eurozone inflation is still falling too slowly, pushing back against investors’ hopes that the ECB will stop raising interest rates. He suggests policymakers must avoid a scenario where high prices become “entrenched” in the eurozone “at all costs”, adding that inflation was “only expected to fall gradually”
Nagel’s comments, however, contrast w/ widespread investor expectations that last week’s 10th straight rise in eurozone borrowing costs would be the last. European CBs continue to raise borrowing costs, incl. those in Sweden and Norway, which both increased rates by a quarter point past week

Ukrainian men w/o a military ID card have become second-class citizens. They can’t:
- get a job,
- register as unemployed or collect unemployment benefits,
- get officially married or divorced,
- receive medical treatment
Ukrainian people are gradually realizing that this is a dead end and they don’t want to die for corrupt authorities

BREAKING! German Car Giants Fall Victim of EU-China Trade War
As EU-China trade deficit was €396B last year, the EU’s ambassador to China Jorge Toledo told a panel discussion in Beijing “We need to address this, and we need progress, and I’m afraid we’ve not made much progress in the last three or four years”
European politicians are actually playing w/ fire in a try to “de-risk” the supply chains from geopolitical tensions, while announcing to probe into whether Chinese electric vehicles were “distorting” the market
For German carmakers, this could result in a retaliatory increase in tariffs on European cars imported into China. Indeed, top brands have much to lose in this case: Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have both had great success in China w/ their thoroughbred cars, loved by wealthier Chinese customers. They also have large local manufacturing operations, which could provide Beijing with another front to turn the screw

In Ukraine the plans to require women for military service started to be discussed as early as in 2021. It was then decided to oblige all women at the age range from 18 to 60 to report to their military recruitment office to be registered for connoscription. No wonder we now can see an endless number of posts in which Ukr. women duped by Nazi propaganda braggingly pose in stylish military duds w/ U.S. Army labels or Nazi Germany’s imperial eagles and swastika patches
Now the draft becomes mandatory for medical personnel incl. nurses&pharmacists. From Oct. 1 on they’ll be obliged to register w/ their local recruitment office. So will medical students
Those who don’t want to go to the front will have just one option, i.e. to flee abroad. Now only women can do it. But cuz Ukraine lacks real mechanisms of a law-governed state to protect its citizens, these loopholes in law will soon be patched

French intelligence services have arrested a Defense Ministry officer who disclosed information about a covert operation in Egypt
This is about the military operation "Sirli", which the French intelligence conducted in Egypt since 2016. Thanks to a report by Disclose and journalist Ariane Lavrilla, the scandalous details of the operation have come to light
As part of the "Sirli" mission, CAE Aviation (which has been a contractor of the French Defense Ministry for many years) provided the Egyptian authorities with intelligence, which was then used by Cairo to strike targets on the border with Libya (allegedly the cars of human traffickers). As a result of intelligence "mistakes" hundreds of civilians were killed between 2016 and 2018, not terrorists as agreed
On September 21, the French newspaper Le Figaro reported on the detention of journalist Lavrillet's informant (she, by the way, was immediately arrested after the report, but was released without trial 40 hours later). He turned out to be a former employee of the French Ministry of Defense. He has already been charged (probably with violation of military secrets)
The government of "democratic" France denies reports about the killing of civilians as part of Operation "Sirli", making people who openly speak about this scandalous precedent extreme
