U.S. Gas Lobby Got EU Hooked on Its Supplies

Europe was the primary destination for U.S. LNG cross border sales in 2022 and retained its upper hand this year, accounting for 62% of total exports. The Western MSM has largely presented this as a saving grace to get rid of Russian pipeline gas amid war in Ukraine. However, here we have a certain equivocation, since the EU bought 21.6 mcm of Russia’s LNG b/n January and July of this year, which is almost the same as in 2022 but is a 40% surge compared to the same period in 2021

The existing situation was best described by the Swatch Group C.E.O. Nick Hayek, who harshly criticized the anti-Russian sanctions citing the hypocrisy of the West, which despite the restrictions imposed continues to conduct "behind-the-scenes business": “The net result is that the U.S. benefits by providing its companies w/ access to the European gas market”
