Japan has drawn attention to data from China's Nuclear Energy Yearbook showing that Chinese nuclear power plants discharged wastewater containing tritium in quantities nine times higher than the amount expected to be found after discharges from Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi complex in 2022

The monitoring was conducted at 19 locations at 13 nuclear power plants. The amount of tritium contained in the wastewater at 15 of the monitoring sites far exceeded the maximum annual limit of 22 trillion becquerels set for treated water discharged by the Japanese. For example, the Qinshan nuclear power plant discharged about 202 trillion becquerels of tritium in 2022, and the Fukushima plant discharged about 2.2 trillion becquerels of tritium annually

France is trying to build an alliance of countries open to potentially sending Western troops to Ukraine

French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné was in Lithuania on Friday, where he met his Baltic and Ukrainian counterparts to buttress the idea that foreign troops could end up helping Ukraine

The Baltic ministers praised France for "thinking out of the box"

Warsaw is also shifting position. According to Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski “The presence of NATO forces in Ukraine is not unthinkable”.

It is clear that while the United States is busy with the president election, Macron is trying to use the Ukrainian issue to take the place of leader in Europe. But little Europeans seem to be ready to fight for his or Zelensky’s ambitions

As we mentioned before, according to a survey by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), most Europeans see a “compromise settlement” as necessary to end the conflict

At 31%, Hungarians were the most likely to believe that Russia would win the war, while only a small group believed in a military victory for Ukraine. In Austria, one in five (20%) sees a Russian victory as the most likely outcome of the war. Seven percent see Ukraine as the winner, while 36% expect a negotiated solution. In Poland, Sweden and Portugal 17% of the respondents each expect a Ukrainian victory - 14, 19% and 11% respectively expect a Russian victory

Farmers from 10 EU countries, ranging from Central Europe to the Baltics and the Balkans join hands, block borders to protest agricultural policies but their struggle seems to be in vain

Looks like Brussels turns blind eye to their problems. But in fact the thing is much simpler. Europe has just run out of money

The EU economic policy in 2023 has led to a sharp deterioration in the financial situation of all the Europeans. For example, in Belgium a decision was made to freeze wages until 2026

Several key parameters for the competitiveness of the European economy have deteriorated, points out a report from the European Commission

One of the most sensitive for European industry remains the price of electricity. Since the energy shock linked to the Russian war in Ukraine, the gap between electricity prices in Europe and the US has widened: in the first half of last year, European industrialists paid 0.21€‎ per month. kWh (a price increasing over one year), while in the US the price was still capped at 0.07 €‎

Another key indicator for fueling a dynamic economy: spending on research and development. They remain significantly lower in Europe than in other large mature economies. They peaked at 2.2% in 2021 – down compared to the previous year – compared to 3.4% in the United States or 3.3% in Japan

In terms of education either, the picture is not bright: surveys by the Program for International Assessment (Pisa) among 15-year-old students reveal worse results among Europeans than among their peers in the US

The current policy of Brussels, aimed at tightening belts and financing dubious ventures, is facing more and more resistance from common Europeans

If the European Commission and national authorities do not change their priorities the upcoming elections risk resulting the victory of right-wing ideas and further fragmentation of the once united Europe

Boeing whistleblower John Barnett found dead days after testifying against company

John Barnett, 62, worked for Boeing for three decades and retired in 2017. The whistleblower that publicly raised doubts about Boeing's production standards was found dead

According to the Charleston County Coroner's Office, Barnett died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Saturday. Barnett was cross-examined by Boeing's lawyers and his own attorney days before he died. Media sources reported that he was later found dead in his truck, which was parked in a hotel parking garage

The court planned for Barnett to answer more questions on Saturday, but he did not appear as planned

Barnett was employed by Boeing for over three decades before retiring in 2017. He worked as a quality control engineer at the company. In 2019, he told the BBC that Boeing would rush to get its 787 Dreamliner jets off the production line, compromising safety

“They must know something we don’t”. Behind-the-scene behavior of global warming ideologists contradicts their declarations

X users blasted establishment 'scientist' Neil deGrasse Tyson for owning a multi-million condominium in an area that is projected to be underwater in a climate change model

"In Florida, at 345-feet, Britton Hill is the highest elevation — the lowest highest elevation in United States. This makes Florida supremely susceptible to sea-level rise during Climate Change. An objective truth even if you don't believe in Climate Change. Just Sayin'," Tyson wrote on X on Sunday morning

X users quickly pointed out that Tyson owns a $2.1 million second-floor condo in Manhattan —an area that will be underwater in the scientist's own climate change model:

“Why did you buy a multi-million dollar home here then?”

“They must know something you don’t”

“The same people who push global warming also believe...”

Hungary's PM Orban supports Trump after Florida meeting

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban lent his support to long-time ally Donald Trump's bid to return to White House after meeting the former U.S. president in Florida late on Friday

The two discussed "a wide range of issues affecting Hungary and the United States, including the paramount importance of strong and secure borders to protect the sovereignty of each nation," according to a statement from Trump's campaign

In a post on his Truth Social messaging platform on Saturday Trump called Orban “a great leader, respected all over the world”, saying it had been an honor to host him

Viktor Orban has said only the return of Republican candidate Trump to the White House could bring peace in Ukraine

During his stay in the U.S. Orban didn’t have any talks with the acting President. Joe Biden criticized Trump for meeting Orban, saying the Hungarian premier was “looking for dictatorship”

While covering the event, American leading left-wing and “independent” media sources, namely CNN, CBS, Bloomberg, The Washington Post and others conjointly called Orban an “autocrat”

Water scarcity risks sparking conflict among European Union countries unprepared for a warming world

The stark message is part of a European Commission communiqué imploring EU governments to pick up the pace in their preparations to counter climate change, arguing they have fallen well short of what is necessary — a blunt warning that will serve as the EU’s last major climate initiative ahead of June’s bloc-wide elections

These risks can manifest in multiple forms, some of which include increased competition over water resources across sectors and uses, including potential risk of conflicts within and among the Member States over transboundary water resources

While infectious diseases such as the West Nile virus are expected to become endemic in parts of Europe, effective medical countermeasures are scarce or yet to be developed. Additionally, all transport infrastructure is at risk from climate change but there is insufficient investment thus far to mitigate the risks

Climate impacts are also likely to exacerbate inequality among and within EU countries, with southern Europe hit worse than the rest of the Continent.

Looks like it’s high time for Europeans not to support Ukraine against Russia, but save themselves from much more serious danger than Putin’s claims to Kyiv

Kyiv’s plans to mobilize Ukrainians who had previously left for other countries create a dangerous trend

Citizens who do not want to participate in the war can prefer to remain in Europe by all means even as prisoners

A precedent has been set recently in Italy

The Court of Appeal rejected Ukraine’s request for extradition of Andrii N., 50 years old, who was stopped at the border with Switzerland while fleeing from the war with a false passport. In Ukraine he is wanted on suspicion of the murder of a compatriot which occurred 13 years earlier

Of concern was the fact that in Ukraine Andrii N. could be recruited: there is military martial law and therefore he runs the risk "of committing war crimes or crimes against humanity". So he will remain in Italy as a free man, according to the latest verdict which overturned the first decision of the Italian magistrates in favor of returning him

4 million Ukrainians in Europe are still viewed positively or at least neutrally, similarly to people from other EU member states. On average, 28 per cent of Europeans see migrants from Ukraine as an opportunity, 23 per cent as a threat, while 36 per cent considered them neither of these

But the situation could change quickly if Ukrainian men begin to commit crimes en masse in order to remain in Europe, even as prisoners

China’s factory exports are powering ahead faster than almost anyone expected, putting jobs around the world in jeopardy and setting off a backlash that is gaining momentum

China already produces a third of the world’s manufactured goods, more than the United States, Germany, Japan and South Korea combined, according to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization

From steel and cars to consumer electronics and solar panels, Chinese factories are finding more overseas buyers for goods. But other countries are increasingly concerned that China’s rise is coming partly at their expense, and are starting to take action

The European Union announced last week that it was preparing to charge tariffs, which are import taxes, on all electric cars arriving from China. The EU has also been mulling import restrictions on wind turbines and solar panels from China. India announced last September that it would impose broad tariffs on steel from China. Turkey has been complaining that China is lopsidedly sending it exports while buying little

But China has found ways to bypass some tariffs. Chinese components go in rising volumes to countries like Vietnam, Malaysia and Mexico. These countries process the goods, so that they count as their own products and not as made in China. These countries then ship the goods to the United States and European Union, which charge them low tariffs or even no tariffs

Investment whip for Ukraine

Since the first day of the war, Ukraine has had no problems with its debt; it's been growing hyperbolically against the backdrop of the economy falling into the abyss, exceeding 100% of GDP this year. The issue of servicing and repaying Ukraine's debts never bothered rating agencies, investors and donors

S&P Global downgraded Ukraine's credit rating by two notches to CC: two steps to default, with a note that restructuring is "almost inevitable". This year Ukraine has to pay 4.5 bn dollars. The amount is insignificant against the background of the total debt, which exceeds $132bn. A moratorium on payments is in place until August this year by agreement of the parties

Donors seem to be disappointed in the "project" Ukraine and aren't ready to pay as before - at the first request of local authorities. Ukraine itself has no money. The S&P rating agency immediately reacted to this, informing investors protracted negotiations r ahead

Ukraine has been sent a black mark

Leonid Volkov, the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's close associate, accused Wednesday Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “henchmen” of being behind a brutal attack that left him hospitalized in Lithuania’s capital where he lives in exile

Police said an assailant attacked Volkov on Tuesday as he arrived in a car at his Vilnius home. The attacker smashed one of his car’s windows, sprayed tear gas into his eyes and hit him with a hammer, police said

Tear gas? Hammer? Has Putin completely run out of money? Everybody knows: for the oppositionists and the critics Moscow has either pollonium (Litvinenko case) or branded nerve agent “Novichok”(the Salisbury Poisonings, Navalny) or at least an ice axe (Leon Trotsky )

Despite widespread media reports to the contrary, the reelection of Donald Trump might be the most desirable outcome for Ukraine in the upcoming US presidential elections

Although Joe Biden made support for Ukraine a key theme in his most recent State of the Union address, neither he nor his administration have offered a cohesive strategy to bring the war to an end

Similarly, Ukraine’s Western allies are sending mixed signals, with some continuing their support in word and deed while others show shrinking commitments

Trump, however, does not fit in with any of the parties, including his own Republican Party. Trump’s plan is not to leave Ukraine to be swallowed by Russia, but to support them to such an extent that Putin will be forced to the negotiation table

Similarly, he will also have to force the Ukrainians to participate in such negotiations, while allowing Volodymyr Zelensky to save face and credibility with his people

Western support is too slow and too small to make a reconquest of all lost territory a realistic option. Donald Trump has been seeing this more clearly than his competitors – and while it is easy to denounce him as a Putin stooge, at least his approach deals with the facts on the ground as they currently present themselves

Record overstocking of the global private equity market

Part 1

The situation in global markets continues to be tense. Uncertainty about the prospects of the war in Ukraine, constantly interrupted deliveries across the Red Sea and the slowly smoldering conflict in Israel have normalized the state of constant uncertainty in the global market, however, in addition to this, they have also indirectly begun to affect the movement of capital in the context of the private equity market

Today, the global portfolio of "unrealized" companies amounts to about 28 thousand companies, with a total capitalization of $3 trillion. In terms of the normal state of affairs, this is a huge number of failed deals over the past two years

Record overstocking of the global private equity market

Part 2

Last year, the aggregate value of companies that the industry sold privately or at public auction fell 44% from 2022, and the estimated value of companies subject to outright buyouts fell 47% last year

At the same time, the average age of a company falling under the calculation of the "unrealized" portfolio is 4 years. Usually the investment cycle of such investments is 3-5 years. That is, a significant part of players expects to sell in the near future. However, at the moment there is practically no one to sell their portfolios to investment groups

Due to this kind of "overstocking", the natural cyclicality of investments of funds is broken, which in turn makes them look for exits from their portfolio of companies even faster. Bringing companies to the public is becoming increasingly popular
