Der Held ("The Hero")
Es war einmal ein junger Held,
Man weiß von ihm zu sagen,
Den Riesen und den Drachen hat
Im Felde er erschlagen.
Den Riesen und den Drachen konnt'
Er mannhaft wohl besiegen,
Dem zarten Volk der Zwerge mußt'
Er ruhmlos unterliegen.
Die Zwerge waren einst wie heut
Die vielen kleinen Dinge,
Die sich dir nahen spät und früh
Unwichtig und geringe.
Die albern sind und schal und dumm
Und knirpsig, kaum zu fassen.
Die drängen, zwingen, hindern dich
In deinem Tun und Lassen.
Hast du auch manchen harten Strauß
Mit Ihnen schon bestanden,
Am Ende schlagen sie dich doch
In Ketten und in Banden.
Zeichnung und Gedicht von Wilhelm Schulz, 1910

History: Life's Teacher
"History most assuredly is 'vitae magistra', the teacher for life; but there is history and history. In fact, history does not prove anything, for all facts are equally historical — history gives us many examples of brutality as of humanity, of truth as of falsehood. The Huns also are historical. The real question has always been, and always will be, whether we are to bow unquestioningly before all historical facts, or whether we are resolved to master them. I am an adherent of realism; but the spiritual and moral forces in society and their growth are not less real than the Prussian generals; we can and must accept political realism..."
Tomás Garrigue Masaryk, founding president of Czechoslovakia

Brazilian Prince Dom Augusto of Saxe-Coburgo-Gota and Braganza in traditional dress on his visit to Japan in 1889. Known as the Sailor Prince, Dom Augusto was a career officer of the Imperial Navy and, at the time of the republican coup, was aboard the ship Almirante Barroso and was taking his first circumnavigation trip. Due to communication problems, the news of the coup only arrived almost a month later, with a telegram dismissing His Highness from service by imposing on him exile along with the Imperial Family. The Prince was left in Ceylon after a hearty farewell dinner given by the captain and crew of the vessel, when Dom Augusto distributed personal belongings as a sign of remembrance. Son of the Duke of Saxe with Princess Leopoldina of Braganza, grandson of Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil, he died in 1922.

Hitler's Revolution: Ideology, Social Programs, Foreign Affairs
By Tedor Richard
Drawing on over 200 German sources, many pre-1945, Hitler's Revolution provides concise, penetrating insight into the National Socialist ideology and how it transformed German society. The government's success at relieving unemployment and its social programs to eliminate class barriers unlock the secret to Hitler's undeniable popularity which, in light of war crimes, seems so incomprehensible today.
Documents from German, Soviet and British archives help illuminate the diplomatic atmosphere of the times and the challenge Hitler confronted when weighing foreign policy decisions. Evidence shows that these were often spontaneous reaction to fluctuating political constellations rather than planned long in advance. During the war, oppressive German measures in occupied countries invited criticism from within Germany as the Nat Socialist dogma, particularly the race theory, began losing influence in official circles and military

"Russian children, who were so hated by Lenin, who made them orphans, slaughtering them and degrading their souls with atheist propaganda. Here, in an old, pre-revolutionary photo, there are children from different families in a hug. Happy children who do not know about Lenin."

Gorsky's Photos - The Empire that was
In 1909 a remarkable project was initiated by Russian photographer Sergey Mikhaylovich Prokudin-Gorsky. His mission was to record – in full and vibrant color – the vast and diverse Russian Empire. During his travels, Prokudin-Gorsky managed to record for the world the many faces of Russia. Prokudin-Gorsky recorded the every day existence of ordinary people.
During the revolution he was awarded a new professorship under the communist regime this must have grated for a member of the aristocracy, even a minor one. In 1918, a year after the revolution, Prokudin-Gorsky left Russia permanently.
