این مقاله با تکیه بر دادههای جمعآوریشده از کاربران موبایل در آمریکا، نخستین ارزیابی تجربی از شبکهٔ «ارتباط مستقیم ماهواره به موبایل» استارلینک را ارائه میدهد و نشان میدهد که این فناوری، که از ۲۰۲۴ با همکاری T‑Mobile و در قالب سرویس پیامکی آغاز شده، در عمل قابل اتکا است اما هنوز محدودیتهای مهمی دارد. پژوهش نشان میدهد که با افزایش تعداد ماهوارهها، تعداد سلولهای قابل مشاهده و حجم اندازهگیریها نیز بیشتر شده و استفاده عمدتاً در مناطق فاقد پوشش زمینی رخ میدهد.

کیفیت سیگنال نسبت به شبکههای زمینی بسیار ضعیفتر است (میانگین RSRP حدود ۲۴ دسیبل پایینتر)، هرچند RSRQ کمی بهتر است که با ماهیت پیامکی سرویس فعلی سازگار است. تحلیل SINR نشان میدهد که سرویس دادهٔ آینده احتمالاً حدود ۳ مگابیتبرثانیه برای هر beam در فضای باز ارائه خواهد داد و با تصمیمات مقرراتی و توسعهٔ بیشتر منظومهٔ ماهوارهای میتواند تا حدود ۱۸ مگابیتبرثانیه افزایش یابد. این مطالعه تصویری واقعگرایانه از توان فعلی و مسیر تکامل DS2D ارائه میکند و نشان میدهد که این فناوری در وضعیت کنونی بیشتر برای پوشش پایه و اضطراری مناسب است، نه جایگزینی کامل برای شبکههای زمینی.
