Question: Why do we still have banks?

Forget crypto, let the money be centralized, but why won't the national bank deal with the people directly, with digital means. Banks were necessary in the past due to the paper work and stuff but now with digital systems, why do we still have banks?

They create inflation, take percentages from every transaction and enrich some share holders and board members. And when those people running the bank screw up and file for bankruptcy they get bailed out without any strings attached, using tax payer money.

Their primary obligation is to maximize returns for shareholders.

Almost all major financial crises were caused by banks. The Great Depression and the 2008 crisis being the most catastrophic ones.
