Carl Tanzler aka Count Carl von Cosel was found, in 1940 Key West, to have been living with the corpse of a former patient of his for 7 years. The corpse was that of Elena Hoyos who was only 22 years old when she died of tuberculosis. The considerably older von Cosel had become obsessed with the young woman and was determined to cure her fatal illness. So when she finally died, he had to adjust his thinking from curing an illness to curing death itself.
Individuals blind to the sexual opposite within them, be they men or women, never realise that the partner they choose is chosen because he or she bears some resemblance to the anima or animus. The anger and hurt felt at the true discovery of the partner's failings is really anger and hurt directed at oneself; and this would become apparent, were one to see the dark figure within one's own unconscious impelling one into a particular relationship. Like always attracts like; rather than railing at the partner, one should take a long, close look at one's own psychic makeup.

Magical work involves change and creation. And the subject of the magician’s work is the self. The magician is the focus of his or her own alchemical processes. By adapting one’s personal vision to reflect the macrocosm, we can change ourselves to better reflect those divine ideas. We may alter our body, appearance, the chemical composition of our blood, and the configuration of our nervous system. We may tame the feral beasts that dwell within our organic structure. By changing ourselves to resonate with the divine, we may transmute every portion of ourselves and become as purified vessels for the eternal spirit.
