The famous Monticello Dam on Lake Berryessa, is best known for its unique hydro-sluice. This type of weir is a giant concrete pipe into which water flows when the lake rises. The Monticello Dam weir is also known as the "Glory Hole.
The opening of this hole is located about 60 meters from the dam itself. Water begins to flow into the pipe when the volume of the lake reaches about 2 million cubic meters of water. The depth of the funnel is 21 meters. In one second, the drain passes through more than 1,370 cubic meters of water.
