In Africa's shallow freshwater lakes and ponds live unusual fish - protopters. If their body of water suddenly dries up, they can live without water for months simply by burrowing into the ground.

With the onset of the dry season, the protopter begins to prepare for hibernation. During this time, it digs a nest, where it will stay for six to nine months, or even longer, until water returns. This fish digs its hole with its mouth, throwing crushed soil through the gill slits. When the "bedroom" is ready, the protopter climbs into it and stays there until the water completely recedes.

Turtles with two or sometimes even three heads are a rare but true phenomenon. This is what happens when twins begin to develop in the egg, but for some reason the embryos do not separate completely.

The double-headed turtle has two brains, four eyes, and two mouths. It can crawl, swim, reproduce and eat, but it eats twice as much as its congeners and grows much faster.
