The ladder was created by a Chinese artist named Cai Guo-Qiang, who timed its incarnation to coincide with his grandmother's 100th birthday.

On Facebook, Qiao wrote that he wanted to create a "stairway to heaven." It's worth noting that he's been trying to make a ladder out of fireworks for the past 20 years, and this is the first time it's ever worked.
