Honestly, Robert E. Howard (Conan the Barbarian, Solomon Kane, and Kull the Conqueror in the picture above) wasn't that great of a writer, but his contribution to fantasy can't simply be downplayed. Also, he was buds with Lovecraft and his clique.
Verdict: By all means read Howard, just don't expect Tolkien-tier prose.
