Belgian military man Jurgen Konings is on the run after threatening to attack virologist Van Ranst, who advises the government on countering the coronavirus. The man is wanted by the police and the army: before disappearing, he stole a whole arsenal of weapons from a military base. Conings, 46, left home on May 17. His girlfriend called the military, finding his letters to family and friends: in them he said goodbye, claiming that "he no longer wants to live in a society ruled by politicians and virologists." Before his disappearance from the military base where he served, four grenade launchers, a submachine gun, a pistol and a bulletproof vest were missing.

Before fleeing, Konings threatened the country's chief virologist, Mark Van Ranst, and left letters promising to wage a deadly battle with the police. On social media, the soldier also spoke out against the restrictions due to COVID-19 and urged supporters to join the resistance. The Belgian police and army are on full alert. At this moment in the country they are looking for a deserter - an experienced sniper and shooting instructor. Belgian counter-terrorism experts take the threat extremely seriously. Several army barracks are closed and servicemen are prohibited from leaving them.
