Forget traditional K-9 units— one Brazilian prison has turned to an unlikely squad of feathered guards.

At the São Pedro de Alcântara penitentiary in Santa Catarina state, authorities have deployed a flock of geese as an innovative early-warning system to thwart escape attempts.

Nicknamed “geese agents,” these birds patrol the grassy buffer zone between the inner and outer perimeter fences. Their job is simple yet effective: detect any unusual activity and raise the alarm.

Prison director Marcos Roberto de Souza notes that while the facility already relies on electronic monitoring and human guards, the geese add a highly sensitive final layer of security. The flock, led by a goose called Piu-Piu, instinctively reacts to intruders with loud honking thanks to their strong territorial behavior.

The switch from guard dogs to geese was motivated by cost savings and practical advantages. Feeding and caring for geese is far cheaper than maintaining trained canines, and the prison’s quiet rural setting amplifies the birds’ natural vigilance. In the near-silence of day and night, even minor disturbances trigger immediate, unmistakable alerts that prompt rapid response from staff.

This clever, low-cost solution demonstrates how harnessing animals’ innate instincts can provide reliable, low-tech security—proving that nature sometimes outperforms expensive technology.
