During the 2020 lockdown, students who won exchange programs from Uzbekistan were not able to travel to the United States. American Councils organized a Youth Leadership Conference to bring together the young leaders and get them working on projects to develop in their communities around the country.

From June 12-14, 76 finalists and semifinalists from the TechGirl Exchange, SUSI Women’s Leadership program, CIEE work and travel, FLEX, Global UGRAD, and YPIP programs attended a conference focused on project management and design led by American Councils staff and a team of U.S. Government alumni mentors and Fulbright English Teaching Assistants. In addition to learning the steps to develop and organize community projects, participants learned and developed their leadership skills through experiential teambuilding activities. The conference also included a series of pre-event trainings through Zoom.

From June 14-26th, the English-Speaking Nation: Secondary Teacher Training Program (ESN:STT) launched the in-person TESOL Core Certificate Program (TCCP) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan for 93 Core Trainers.

The Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Alan Meltzer, and the Minister of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Sherzod Shermatov, took part in the opening ceremony of June TCCP. Initially planned as a full in-person course, the first 60-hour Foundation Course was hosted virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions and public health regulations. The in-person June TCCP course is the second 60 hours of the training course.

On June 26th the TCCP in Tashkent was officially over and, currently, four TESOL instructors, in partnership with the ESN U.S. Coaches, are delivering seven TCCP courses in different regions of Uzbekistan throughout July and August to over 230 teachers. Stay tuned for more news about next stages of the Program.
