Invading forces used mass sexual assault against women and girls of the region as a weapon of psychological warfare. Read more coverage about this issue from MNN here.

Eric Foley of the Voice of the Martyrs Korea works with Christians in Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea. He says even as the nation declared a three-day mourning period to honor the combatants who lost their lives during the two-year violent war that ended in November 2022, life for survivors can be difficult.

He tells of one woman who was sexually assaulted in a hospital. “She contracted AIDS. So she has to go to a clinic for HIV medication. But every time she goes, she wraps herself with a shawl so that our face is hidden [and her] identity is concealed. She hasn’t even told her daughters that she has HIV.”

Ethiopia has $33 million eurobond coupon due in December

Ethiopia’s sole eurobond is close to erasing gains made since a peace process started to end its catastrophic civil war, as investors increase bets that the Horn of Africa nation will default.

The price on its $1 billion in debt due December 2024 fell 0.8 cents on the dollar to 63.88 cents as of 8:55 a.m. in London, the biggest drop in two months to the lowest since January. The securities have declined for nine of the past ten days as optimism about the nation’s future dissipates.

The rescuer, Abdi Tufa, said he was hit by rocks and logs that had been carried by the flood waters from the highlands but he kept going until he reached Riyad Nesru.

The boy had been trapped in the flood while out herding his family's goats in the small town of #Hirna, 350km (220 miles) east of Addis Abeba.

Abdi says he jumped out of the window of the bus in a spur-of-the-moment decision, shocking the other passengers and then going into the river.

#Ethiopia: Unexploded weapons haunt communities ten month after a peace agreement ended two-year war

Ten months after a peace agreement ended the two-year armed conflict in northern Ethiopia, the lives and livelihoods of the people living in weapon-contaminated areas in Tigray, Amhara and Afar are threatened, despite significant improvements in the overall humanitarian situation.

Among those most at risk are children playing and farmers returning to their land located in former battlefields. "My husband was killed by an object that my son brought home. He was trying to collect it from the boy when it exploded, killing him, and injuring our three children," explained Beyenesh Mesfin, who survived the blast in front of her house in Tabya Fithi, in Seyemti Adyabo Woreda, Tigray, on 21 August.
