#Ethiopia: Ethiopian who risked his life to save boy hailed 'angel'

The rescuer, Abdi Tufa, said he was hit by rocks and logs that had been carried by the flood waters from the highlands but he kept going until he reached Riyad Nesru.

The boy had been trapped in the flood while out herding his family's goats in the small town of #Hirna, 350km (220 miles) east of Addis Abeba.

Abdi says he jumped out of the window of the bus in a spur-of-the-moment decision, shocking the other passengers and then going into the river.

#Ethiopia: Unexploded weapons haunt communities ten month after a peace agreement ended two-year war

Ten months after a peace agreement ended the two-year armed conflict in northern Ethiopia, the lives and livelihoods of the people living in weapon-contaminated areas in Tigray, Amhara and Afar are threatened, despite significant improvements in the overall humanitarian situation.

Among those most at risk are children playing and farmers returning to their land located in former battlefields. "My husband was killed by an object that my son brought home. He was trying to collect it from the boy when it exploded, killing him, and injuring our three children," explained Beyenesh Mesfin, who survived the blast in front of her house in Tabya Fithi, in Seyemti Adyabo Woreda, Tigray, on 21 August.

#Ethiopia: Stone Age Ethiopians knew how to source their iron-rich rocks

To reach these conclusions, a team of researchers from #Spain and #France carried out chemical and technological analyses of the largest known collection of red and yellow mineral pigments, commonly called ochre, dated between 300,000 and 40,000 years ago, and found at Ethiopia’s Porc-Epic cave.

The study reveals that human groups visiting this site gradually modified the techniques used to produce pigments, as a result of cultural or environmental changes that limited their access to better-quality raw materials. The research also shows that the area’s inhabitants were able to predict the properties of different ochre types accessible in their environment and gradually adapt their technology according to changes in the availability of raw materials.
