#Op_ed: Stolen Childhoods: Reversing rise of child and forced marriage in post-war #Tigray
Batseba Seifu argues in this opinion piece that child and forced marriage in #Ethiopia’s Tigray region has surged as “a tragic survival strategy” following the 2020–2022 war, undoing decades of progress. Citing research by GEMTigray, she explains, “Families, facing famine, displacement, and collapsed institutions, often see marrying off daughters as their only option.”
The author attributes this crisis to deep structural issues—poverty and inequality—dramatically worsened by the war. Batseba emphasizes that effective intervention is severely limited, stating, “Awareness campaigns or laws cannot succeed in such an environment,” especially with restricted humanitarian access and weaponized sexual violence.
The author contends that ending child marriage “is not only a matter of gender justice—it is central to rebuilding a society devastated by war and famine.”

News: TPLF warns #Pretoria peace agreement “More Seriously Threatened than ever before”
The #Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF) has accused the Ethiopian government of violating and undermining the Pretoria Peace Agreement, warning that the accord is “more seriously threatened than ever before.”
In a statement released on Thursday, the TPLF said the federal government has failed to implement the key provisions of the peace deal signed in November 2022 to end the war in Tigray. The group claimed that “the Ethiopian government has been working to make the agreement meaningless” by arming and supporting forces that continue to occupy parts of Tigray and by obstructing the return of displaced residents.
Referring to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent speech in parliament, the TPLF criticized him for “downplaying the five-year genocide in Tigray” by characterizing the war as a “two-month conflict.”

'Hundreds dead' in #Tanzania post election violence, says opposition
Around 700 people have been killed in three days of election protests in Tanzania, the main opposition party said Friday, with protesters still on the streets in the midst of an internet blackout.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan, whose government is accused of a campaign of repression, had sought to cement her position and silence critics in her party in the virtually uncontested polls, with the main challengers either jailed or barred from standing.
Wednesday's election descended into chaos as huge crowds took to the streets of Dar es Salaam and other cities, tearing down her posters and attacking police and polling stations, leading to an internet shutdown and curfew.

News: Report warns water scarcity, population growth could intensify #GERD tensions; urges pragmatic Nile Basin cooperation
The Foreign Policy Research Institute (#FPRI) has cautioned that growing water scarcity, recurrent droughts, and competing national interests could reignite tensions between #Ethiopia and #Egypt over the operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
In a recent analysis, the #US.-based think tank outlined multiple future scenarios highlighting both the risks of escalation and the potential for cooperation through transparent and adaptive water management.

#AS_Editorial: The Death of Free Movement: Pontification from the sky and luxury resorts vs. #Ethiopia’s reality
When citizens cannot move freely, the state loses its most basic measure of legitimacy. Ethiopia today is a country divided by mobility, where the rulers travel above, and the ruled are trapped below.
In recent weeks, Prime Minister #Abiy_Ahmed & senior #Prosperity_Party (PP) officials and long-time confidants have embarked on a series of high-profile tours to luxury resorts & heritage sites scattered across Ethiopia’s far corners and built under the Prime Minister’s Gebeta Lehager (Dine for Ethiopia) initiative.
In principle, these projects aim to blend eco-tourism with community empowerment. In practice, however, they have become the stage for what many see as performative nationalism, a carefully choreographed display of “unity” and “prosperity” that contrasts sharply with the lived experiences of millions of Ethiopians who cannot move freely...

Inside the #UAE's secret #Sudan war operation at Somalia's Bosaso

For local residents, the sound of such planes was unusual two years ago, when they first began landing in Bosaso. Not anymore. Moments later, undisclosed heavy logistical materials are seen being offloaded from the aircraft.

#Tanzania president wins election landslide after deadly protests
Tanzanian President #Samia Suluhu Hassan has won a landslide election victory, official results showed Saturday, after key candidates were jailed or barred from a vote that has triggered days of violent protests.
The final result showed Hassan won 97.66 percent of the vote, dominating every constituency, the electoral commission announced on state television. A quick swearing-in ceremony would take place on Saturday, state TV said.
The main opposition party, Chadema, says hundreds of people have been killed by security forces since protests broke out on election day on Wednesday. Hassan was elevated from vice-president on the sudden death of her predecessor, John Magufuli, in 2021.
She has faced opposition from parts of the army and Magufuli's allies, & sought to cement her position with an emphatic win, analysts say.

#Opinion: #Somalia’s Power Reckoning: Internal rifts, fractured unilateral agenda
Somalia’s federal system is facing its most profound crisis since its inception in 2012, argues Adam Daud Ahmed in this opinion piece. He notes, “President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s ambitious drive to centralize authority has collided with the entrenched realities of Somalia’s decentralized political landscape.”
Ahmed explains that the crisis was triggered by the March 2024 constitutional amendments, which were swiftly rejected by #Puntland and #Jubaland. Meanwhile, the much-touted “Total War” against #Al_Shabaab was “quickly derailed by political rifts.” He adds that the President’s unilateral push for a “One Person, One Vote” electoral model deepened tensions.
The author concludes, “For President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the choice is stark: accept a genuine recalibration of federal power… or risk presiding over the irreversible disintegration of the Somali state.”

#Kenyan landslide death toll rises to 26 as flash floods hamper search for survivors
The death toll from a deadly landslide in western Kenya has risen to 26 after four more bodies were retrieved on Sunday, shortly before rescue efforts to find survivors were suspended due to a flash flood.
Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said 25 people are still missing and that the government had intensified the search mission, with the military deploying four aircrafts to help teams access the area that has been completely cut off after roads were washed away during Saturday’s landslide.
On Sunday, search teams had to abandon the site after flash floods from a hill in the Chesongoch area in Kenya’s Rift Valley region.
Heavy rains continue across Kenya, and floods have been reported in several counties, displacing thousands of people.

#Djibouti parliament removes presidential age limit: speaker
Djibouti's parliament removed the age limit for presidents with a unanimous vote on Sunday, its speaker told AFP, opening the way for leader Ismail Omar Guelleh to run for a sixth term.
Guelleh, 77, has held power since 1999 in the tiny Horn of Africa nation, a major port that hosts military bases for the United States, #France, #China, #Japan and #Italy. Djibouti's lawmakers unanimously approved the change to the constitution to remove a bar on running for president past the age of 75.
The move allows Guelleh to run in the next election in April 2026, likely facing minimal opposition in a country with limited freedom of expression and press. "The National Assembly ratified the removal of the age limit today, so it is official," said parliament speaker Dileita Mohamed Dileita.
Parliament had already passed the motion a week earlier in an initial vote that was then approved by Guelleh and sent back to lawmakers for the final vote.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has called on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied armed groups to immediately allow civilians to leave Sudan's Al Fasher city as conditions in the North Darfur capital are deteriorating, with abuses against residents escalating.
“We urgently call on the RSF and allied armed groups to spare civilians and let them flee El Fasher,” Michel Olivier Lacharite, MSF head of emergencies, said in a statement published by the organisation on X on Sunday.
He also urged the members of the quad — the US, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt — to use their leverage "to stop the bloodbath” in the city.
The group said it is closely monitoring the situation and warned that the international community “cannot look away” as the humanitarian crisis deepens in Al Fasher.

#Policy_Brief: New Energy Frontier: Assessing #Ethiopia-#Russia nuclear pact, financing model viability
In September 2025, Ethiopia and Russia signed a deal to advance Ethiopia’s nuclear ambitions through a partnership between #ROSATOM and Ethiopian Electric Power (#EEP). In this policy brief, Jozii Admasu argues that Africa now stands “at the center of Russia’s energy strategy,” with “the Soviet Union’s legacy continuing to shape the global nuclear industry.” Using the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, he contends, Russia “exports not just technology but a powerful geopolitical instrument.”
While the fully financed 2,400 MW plant is ambitious, the author states that “the proposed nuclear project in Ethiopia could undermine the nation’s hydropower-centered energy trajectory,” risking “neo-energy controllers.”
