Inside the #UAE's secret #Sudan war operation at Somalia's Bosaso

At #Bosaso Airport in #Somalia’s #Puntland state, the thunderous sound of large aircraft hitting the tarmac echoes out across the port city. Minutes after landing, the aircraft can be identified. It is a white IL-76 heavy cargo transport plane, and it is parking next to a very similar aircraft.

For local residents, the sound of such planes was unusual two years ago, when they first began landing in Bosaso. Not anymore. Moments later, undisclosed heavy logistical materials are seen being offloaded from the aircraft.

“They’re frequent and the logistics are transferred immediately to another aircraft that is on standby and is destined for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) in Sudan through the neighbouring countries,” said Abdullahi, a senior Puntland Maritime Police Force (#PMPF) commander at Bosaso Airport, who spoke to Middle East Eye.....

News: #IFJ Condemns Suspension of Nine #Deutsche_Welle Amharic Reporters, Urges Immediate Reinstatement

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has strongly condemned the temporary suspension of nine reporters from the Deutsche Welle (DW) Amharic Service by the #Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA), calling for the decision to be reversed immediately.

According to DW, the media authority suspended its correspondents, accusing them of “violating Ethiopian law & regulations and failing to respect professional ethics.”

In a statement released on 31 October 2025, the federation described the move as an act of intimidation & harassment intended to silence DW’s reporting and restrict Ethiopians’ access to independent information, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict in the #Amhara region.

“The suspension of the DW reporters by the EMA is a deliberate act of intimidation aimed at depriving Ethiopians of truthful reporting on the conflict in the Amhara region,”...

#Tanzania president wins election landslide after deadly protests

Tanzanian President #Samia Suluhu Hassan has won a landslide election victory, official results showed Saturday, after key candidates were jailed or barred from a vote that has triggered days of violent protests.

The final result showed Hassan won 97.66 percent of the vote, dominating every constituency, the electoral commission announced on state television. A quick swearing-in ceremony would take place on Saturday, state TV said.

The main opposition party, Chadema, says hundreds of people have been killed by security forces since protests broke out on election day on Wednesday. Hassan was elevated from vice-president on the sudden death of her predecessor, John Magufuli, in 2021.

She has faced opposition from parts of the army and Magufuli's allies, & sought to cement her position with an emphatic win, analysts say.

#Opinion: #Somalia’s Power Reckoning: Internal rifts, fractured unilateral agenda

Somalia’s federal system is facing its most profound crisis since its inception in 2012, argues Adam Daud Ahmed in this opinion piece. He notes, “President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s ambitious drive to centralize authority has collided with the entrenched realities of Somalia’s decentralized political landscape.”

Ahmed explains that the crisis was triggered by the March 2024 constitutional amendments, which were swiftly rejected by #Puntland and #Jubaland. Meanwhile, the much-touted “Total War” against #Al_Shabaab was “quickly derailed by political rifts.” He adds that the President’s unilateral push for a “One Person, One Vote” electoral model deepened tensions.

The author concludes, “For President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the choice is stark: accept a genuine recalibration of federal power… or risk presiding over the irreversible disintegration of the Somali state.”

#Kenyan landslide death toll rises to 26 as flash floods hamper search for survivors

The death toll from a deadly landslide in western Kenya has risen to 26 after four more bodies were retrieved on Sunday, shortly before rescue efforts to find survivors were suspended due to a flash flood.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said 25 people are still missing and that the government had intensified the search mission, with the military deploying four aircrafts to help teams access the area that has been completely cut off after roads were washed away during Saturday’s landslide.

On Sunday, search teams had to abandon the site after flash floods from a hill in the Chesongoch area in Kenya’s Rift Valley region.

Heavy rains continue across Kenya, and floods have been reported in several counties, displacing thousands of people.

The government has urged those living in flood or landslide....

#Djibouti parliament removes presidential age limit: speaker

Djibouti's parliament removed the age limit for presidents with a unanimous vote on Sunday, its speaker told AFP, opening the way for leader Ismail Omar Guelleh to run for a sixth term.

Guelleh, 77, has held power since 1999 in the tiny Horn of Africa nation, a major port that hosts military bases for the United States, #France, #China, #Japan and #Italy. Djibouti's lawmakers unanimously approved the change to the constitution to remove a bar on running for president past the age of 75.

The move allows Guelleh to run in the next election in April 2026, likely facing minimal opposition in a country with limited freedom of expression and press. "The National Assembly ratified the removal of the age limit today, so it is official," said parliament speaker Dileita Mohamed Dileita.

Parliament had already passed the motion a week earlier in an initial vote that was then approved by Guelleh and sent back to lawmakers for the final vote.

Doctors Without Borders urges #RSF to let civilians flee as violence grows in #Sudan's Al Fasher

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has called on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied armed groups to immediately allow civilians to leave Sudan's Al Fasher city as conditions in the North Darfur capital are deteriorating, with abuses against residents escalating.

“We urgently call on the RSF and allied armed groups to spare civilians and let them flee El Fasher,” Michel Olivier Lacharite, MSF head of emergencies, said in a statement published by the organisation on X on Sunday.

He also urged the members of the quad — the US, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt — to use their leverage "to stop the bloodbath” in the city.

The group said it is closely monitoring the situation and warned that the international community “cannot look away” as the humanitarian crisis deepens in Al Fasher.

#Policy_Brief: New Energy Frontier: Assessing #Ethiopia-#Russia nuclear pact, financing model viability

In September 2025, Ethiopia and Russia signed a deal to advance Ethiopia’s nuclear ambitions through a partnership between #ROSATOM and Ethiopian Electric Power (#EEP). In this policy brief, Jozii Admasu argues that Africa now stands “at the center of Russia’s energy strategy,” with “the Soviet Union’s legacy continuing to shape the global nuclear industry.” Using the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, he contends, Russia “exports not just technology but a powerful geopolitical instrument.”

While the fully financed 2,400 MW plant is ambitious, the author states that “the proposed nuclear project in Ethiopia could undermine the nation’s hydropower-centered energy trajectory,” risking “neo-energy controllers.”

#Shots Fired Toward Tanker in Renewed #Somali #Piracy Activity

A product tanker operated by Stolt Tankers sailing near the coast of Somalia is reporting shots fired and a possible boarding attempt. It is the latest in a series of suspicious activities being reported in the past few days, increasing fears of renewed piracy in the region.

Several security consultancies reported the incident, which was later confirmed by Stolt as well as the UK and EU forces in the region. The tanker Stolt Sagaland (44,000 dwt) was underway from Saudi Arabia to Africa when it was approached on Monday, November 3, while approximately 330 nautical miles southeast of Mogadishu, Somalia. The vessel, registered in the Cayman Islands and built in 2008, is 182 meters (599.5 feet) in length.

The reports from the captain said that they spotted four individuals approaching in a small boat that they believed was attempting to board the tanker. The tanker increased speed and began evasive maneuvers, with reports of several shots fired from AK-47 type weapons. The private security force on the tanker returned fire, and the small boat withdrew.

Stolt reports the crew was uninjured. The vessel was proceeding.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre issued a report last week of suspicious activity off the coast of Somalia and warned to take precautions.

Last week, two dhows were reportedly approached, with one hijacked, possibly during an armed robbery or to act as a mother ship. The dhow flagged in Iran was reported to have a crew of 19 aboard.

EUNAVFOR Atalanta issued a warning today, November 3, of three possible incidents in the past 24 hours, all taking place in the same area off Mogadishu. On November 2, a 3,500-dwt commercial fishing boat registered in the Seychelles reported that a high-speed skiff approached from the stern. They identified a nearby mothership and issued a “warning burst” as the boat approached. The skiff returned to the mother ship.

While in custody, officials determined that he was a supporter of the Eritrean government—an assessment that was forwarded to the interior minister, who approved his removal under Israeli immigration law.

Opening arguments are set to begin Tuesday in a civil trial against US aviation giant Boeing, marking the first courtroom hearing stemming from the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed all 157 people on board.
