#Context: The reported hostilities in the #Afar region today come amid deepening political and military divisions within the #Tigray region and the emergence of a splinter armed group known as the “Tigray Peace Force (TPF),” which operates along the Afar–Tigray border and opposes the TPLF leadership in Tigray.

Leaders of the TPF claim they are operating in what they describe as “a free land.” Earlier this month, Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede, rejected that claim, stating, “the free land is not inside Tigray; the free land is inside the Afar Regional State.”

Tadesse said differences with the group must be resolved peacefully, but cautioned that “any provocation coming from the Afar Region will be considered to be from the Afar Gov't or the Federal Gov't, and will not be considered as being carried out by Tegaru.”

He further called on all armed groups operating in the Afar Regional State to “lay down their weapons” and commit to dialogue.

#Sudan: Dozens killed in attack on funeral in Kordofan region

A deadly drone attack took place in el-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces were preparing to launch an assault on the army in the region.

At least 40 people were killed in an attack on a funeral in el-Obeid, a key city in Sudan's central Kordofan region which is contested by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the army.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported the attack on Wednesday, but did not specify when the attack occurred or who were the perpetrators. According to the Sudan Tribune and other local media outlets, the RSF launched drone strikes targeting a funeral service in el-Obeid on Monday.

"Local sources report that at least 40 civilians were killed and dozens injured yesterday in an attack on a funeral gathering in el-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State," the UN's agency said.

"Once again, OCHA calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and for all parties to protect civilians and respect international humanitarian law."

#Op_ed: Beneath Ceasefire: #Tigray’s children trapped in cycle of trauma, exploitation

More than two years after the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, “Tigray’s children remain trapped in trauma, displacement, and exploitation,” writes Batseba Seifu in this op-ed.

According to the author, “the humanitarian collapse… has created fertile ground for predators and profiteers,” as traffickers target displaced children with false promises of employment before selling them into forced labor or sexual servitude. Batseba notes, “Boys as young as 12 are smuggled to farms and informal mining sites, while girls are trafficked for domestic or sexual exploitation.”

The author calls for immediate and concrete action: accountability for perpetrators, the restoration of robust child protection systems, enhanced cross-border cooperation to combat trafficking, and comprehensive, survivor-centered care.

#Ethiopia’s grand renaissance dam: What lessons can #Uganda learn?

On September 9, 2025, the Ethiopian prime minister, Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (#GERD), a towering 145-metre-tall engineering and architectural marvel.

The GERD is projected to generate 5,100MW of electricity at full capacity, which will double Ethiopia’s power output. Crucially, it will provide electricity to an estimated 60 per cent of Ethiopians who currently have no access and contribute to the country’s growing industrial power needs.

Consequently, Ethiopia offers critical lessons for Uganda. Estimated to have cost about $5 billion, Africa’s largest power plant was financed through a combination of government funds, bonds and contributions from Ethiopians both at home and in the diaspora.

In contrast, many power projects in Ugandan face insufficient funding, which leads to delays in commissioning the plant.

News: Political parties’ council warns legal and security conditions threaten free and fair #Election, urges reforms ahead of 7th general Poll

The #Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council (EPPJC) has urged the government and relevant institutions to revise existing election laws and address security challenges that it says could undermine the credibility of the upcoming 7th General Election.

In a letter issued on 5 November 2025, the Council warned that “the current legal framework and peace and security conditions in the country do not allow political parties to operate freely,” adding that these constraints risk preventing a fair and competitive electoral process.

The Council said it is working to ensure that the next national election will be “freer, fairer, more peaceful, and more democratic than any previous one,” and that the results are acceptable to all stakeholders, including voters, political parties, and observers.

The Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group that has been at war with the Sudanese military for over two years, said Thursday it has agreed to a humanitarian truce proposed by a U.S.-led mediator group known as the Quad.

“The Rapid Support Forces looks forward to implementing the agreement and immediately commencing discussions on arrangements for a cessation of hostilities and the fundamental principles guiding the political process in Sudan, in a manner that addresses the root causes of the conflicts, ending the suffering of the Sudanese people,” an RSF statement read.

Strengthening #Nigeria’s primary health system with lessons from #Ethiopia

On 22 October 2025, Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare approved and released 32.9 billion Naira under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), the third disbursement this year.

In 2023, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Government launched the Primary Health Care Revitalisation Plan as part of the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII). The goal was to revitalise about 17,600 primary health care centres (PHCs) by 2027, ensuring at least one fully functional PHC in every ward.

However, as of September 2025, more than two years after, only 1,295 PHCs had reached the required standard.

Ethiopia operates a mixed financing system for its PHCs; The government treasury is the main source of funding, covering about 32.2 % of total health expenditure.....

A #US judge dropped criminal charges against Boeing on Thursday over deadly crashes of its 737 MAX 8 aircraft as part of an agreement between the company and prosecutors, AFP reports.

Judge Reed O'Connor's decision stemmed from a May 23 agreement between the Department of Justice (#DoJ) and the aircraft manufacturer to resolve the case over two crashes that resulted in 346 fatalities.

Under the deal, Boeing will pay $1.1 billion in return for the dismissal of a charge of "conspiracy to defraud the United States" over its conduct in the certification of the MAX, according to a federal filing.

#Commentary: Genesis of Two Digital Cities: Social Media as dual polis; rise of virtual serfdom in #Ethiopia

Social media, from its early forms to platforms like TikTok, has become a "simultaneously redemptive and corrosive polis" in Ethiopia, writes Guyo Wariyo Aba-Jirma. While offering liberating potential, it has produced a "fractured digital polity characterized by hyper-polarization."

He notes that TikTok, in particular, has emerged as a forum where users are “rendered incapable of critically interrogating… manipulative perils,” allowing “virality [to] supplant veracity, and spectacle [to be] privileged over substance.” State crackdowns target dissent, while pro-government actors operate under “de facto immunity,” enacting a “tragic reversal: from resistance to complicity.”

The author emphasizes that Ethiopia’s digital future hinges on “constitutional safeguards, pedagogical investments, and the moral clarity of its citizenry.”

#News_Analysis: #Tigray Interim Admn. denies crossing into #Afar, faults federal gov't for undermining Pretoria Agreement

The interim administration said the "accusation is entirely baseless. There has been no violation of the Afar–Tigray border, from either side." However, it said that “repeated attacks” had been carried out against Tigray by armed groups operating in Afar region, alleging that these forces were “organized and armed” with external support.

This is the second time in a month that the interim administration accused TPF of carrying out or planning to carry out attacks against Tigrayan forces.

The TPF was organized by Brigadier General Gebre-Egziabher Beyene, a former senior member of the Tigrayan forces, who claimed to have control over “four divisions” operating in both Afar and Tigray regional states.

Camels replace cows as #Kenya battles drought

"God, God, God, protect them," chanted two herders, their eyes following a dozen #camels rushing toward acacia trees, oblivious to the dry riverbed in northern Kenya where it hasn't rained since April, AFP reports.

Sitting on the edge of a nearby well, Chapan Lolpusike recounted how his cows and oxen "all died" in the worst drought in four decades, caused by a succession of poor rainfall in 2021 and 2022.

After that, the herder made a sweeping change. "We no longer have cattle at home. We only raise camels," said Lolpusike, a member of the semi-nomadic Samburu community. Camels can graze on dry grasses, go more than a week without water, and produce up to six times more milk than cattle -- making them an increasingly necessary option in northern Kenya, an area particularly vulnerable to climate change.

#Ethiopia among three African nations still covered by U.S. Temporary Protected Status after #South_Sudan’s exit

The #United_States government has officially terminated the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for South Sudan, ending protections for thousands of South Sudanese nationals who have lived and worked legally in the U.S. under humanitarian grounds, Africa Business Insider reports.

The decision, part of a broader U.S. immigration policy shift, has renewed attention on the few #African nations that continue to benefit from the program. According to the report, #Somalia, #Ethiopia, and #Sudan remain under TPS protection due to ongoing humanitarian crises that make safe repatriation impossible.

Ethiopia’s inclusion in the program, granted in 2022, was linked to the conflict in #Tigray and large-scale displacement
