#Djibouti at a Crossroads: The presidential transition crisis ahead of April 2026 elections

Djibouti is showing signs of a deepening political crisis as President Ismail Omar Guelleh considers “amending the constitution to pursue a sixth term.” This move has exposed “growing internal divisions among the ruling elite over his potential successor,”, this op-ed argues, signaling instability within one of the #Horn_of_Africa’s most tightly controlled political systems.

Rising tensions and conflict among Djibouti’s political and tribal elites “could undermine the governance system and weaken state institutions,” posing serious risks not only to domestic stability but also to the interests of influential regional and international powers with a foothold in the country.

Given the current dynamics, “three possible trajectories for Djibouti’s ruling system can be anticipated:” a constitutional amendment allowing Guelleh to remain president for a sixth term; ....

#Sudan: Nearly 2,000 civilians displaced by worsening insecurity in Sudan’s North Kordofan state: #UN migration agency

#IOM says new wave of displacement comes amid attacks by paramilitary #RSF

Around 2,000 more civilians have been displaced from the town of Bara and several nearby villages in Sudan's North Kordofan state over the past three days due to worsening insecurity, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Sunday.

In a statement, the IOM said its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) showed that the new wave of displacement took place between Nov. 7 and 9 amid attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The UN agency added that the latest displacement came after a series of attacks in Bara, Sheikan, Rahad, Um Rawaba, and Um Damm Haj Ahmed, which have caused an estimated 38,990 people to flee for safety since Oct. 26.

Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been locked in a war that regional and international mediations have failed to end. The conflict has killed thousands of people and displaced millions of others.

The regional Task Force for Preventing and Combating Illegal Mining said it has seized more than 12,000 grams of mercury used in unauthorized mineral extraction in Tigray, according to local media.

#Sudanese in #Ethiopia face visa woes, political neglect

Sudanese individuals in Ethiopia are facing significant humanitarian and living challenges, along with complications related to residency and visa renewals, Sudan Tribune has been informed.

Ethiopia has received more than 100,000 Sudanese since the conflict began. Authorities have provided some assistance but impose fees of $100 for monthly visa renewals and fines of $300 for each month of delayed renewal.

S.M., a stranded woman who fled to Ethiopia, told Sudan Tribune that the reality facing Sudanese men & women due to displacement “was catastrophic.”

She explained that renewing monthly entry visas has become an extremely difficult and exhausting procedure amid war, loss of income, and scarce resources. This complicates life & is burdensome and costly under the circumstances, she said.

She called on the Ethiopian government to intervene, as it had previously, by granting the Sudanese a nine-month exemption.

#Somalia: Thousands of climate-displaced individuals being failed by authorities and the international community – new report

Somali authorities and the international community have repeatedly failed to protect thousands of people from drought-affected communities in southern Somalia, exposing them to violations of their rights to food, water, family, health and life, Amnesty International said in a new report.

‘No rain, no food, no animals: The human rights impact of drought and displacement in Somalia’ documents how, between 2020 and 2023, climate change-related drought, coupled with conflict and marginalization, forced thousands of people to relocate to camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) initially in southern Somalia and then to #Dadaab Refugee Camp in #Kenya. During these arduous journeys, the Somali authorities failed...

#Commentary: Dead or Alive: Rethinking classical #Geʿez language in digital age

In #Ethiopia, the question of whether Geʿez is a “dead” language or a living cultural force remains widely debated. Recent initiatives in the #Amhara region, have renewed interest in its place within modern education.

In this commentary, Keffyalew Gebregziabher argues that the issue “becomes less about strict linguistic definitions and more about how we define language vitality, cultural continuity, and the future of human communication.” Critics label Geʿez “dead,” citing its lack of native speakers, while others insist it “endures as a living symbol of spiritual, cultural, and intellectual continuity.” Artificial Intelligence (#AI) has also given Geʿez new relevance, as Large Language Models can “read, translate, and even converse” in Geʿez.

The author concludes that Geʿez is “immortal—fixed in time yet ever-present.”

Will victims of atrocities in #Ethiopia see justice and accountability?

November 4, 2025, marked 5 years since the beginning of the war in #Tigray, Ethiopia. The war was to end with the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in November 2022. However, while the agreement silenced the bullets, atrocities continue to this day, including conflict-related sexual violence.

Five years after the start of the war, a dozen non-governmental organizations (NGOs) published a joint letter calling for justice for all victims/survivors of the atrocities in Tigray and across the country.

The Tigray War began on November 4, 2020, when “Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered the Ethiopian Defense Forces (#EDF) to militarily engage with the Tigray Regional Paramilitary Police & militia loyal to the Tigray People Liberation Front (#TPLF) in what he stated was a response to multiple attacks by the Tigray security forces...

News: #TPLF chairman accuses Federal Government of blocking mediated talks on #Pretoria agreement implementation

TPLF Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael has accused the Federal Government of blocking efforts to hold a mediated consultation on the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement, saying both the TPLF and the mediators have repeatedly called for such a meeting.

“The mediators and we [the TPLF] want to meet and discuss the implementation of the agreement,” Debretsion said, explaining that the TPLF has submitted repeated requests, and that mediators have also urged for discussions. However, he argued that “it is the Federal Government that has refused” to participate in talks in the presence of the mediators.

Debretsion also criticized the mediators for failing to exert adequate pressure, saying they have limited themselves to offering advice while insisting that ...

World must act now to halt 'horrific atrocities' in #Sudan: #UN

UN rights chief urges urgent action to stop "horrific atrocities” in Sudan’s El-Fasher, warning the world must not wait for #genocide to be declared.

The world must act immediately to halt the "horrific atrocities" in Sudan's El-Fasher, the UN rights chief told AFP Monday, urging countries not to wait until a "genocide" was declared.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been at war with the regular army since April 2023, captured the last military stronghold in western Darfur on 26 October.

Since El-Fasher's takeover after a gruelling 18-month siege, the United Nations and rights monitors have reported widespread atrocities, including ethnically-driven killings and abductions.

"It's clear that atrocity crimes are being committed as we speak," UN Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk told AFP in an interview, stressing that the siege had in itself been "an atrocity crime".

"People were beleaguered and under siege, under horrific conditions, no food, hardly any water... We have reports of people having to eat animal feed, for example, eating peanut shells."

Pointing to the declaration of famine in some parts, he said it was "so desperate... with children dying of starvation".

Since the RSF had swept in, Turk said his office had received "credible evidence of mass killing; that when people are trying to flee this horrible situation, they get shot at".

"There are very serious reports of rape and sexual violence and gang rape, (and) we have very serious issues of killings of those who are supposedly collaborators," he said.

#Ethiopia tapped to host COP32 climate summit

Ethiopia is set to be confirmed on Tuesday as host of the #COP32 climate summit in 2027, the president of this year's COP30 gathering told Reuters.

The choice of host for next year's COP31 remains a point of contention, however, with both #Australia and #Turkey vying for the 2026 event. Australia made its COP31 bid in partnership with the Pacific Islands, which are considered to be among the world's most vulnerable places to climate change.

Participating countries agreed in principle to hold the 2027 conference in Ethiopia’s capital, #Addis_Abeba, during the first day of Brazil's COP30 on Monday, COP30 President André Corrêa do Lago said.

The choice still needs to be formally adopted, which is expected to occur on Tuesday. A delegate from an industrialized country told Reuters they could not imagine why there would be a problem...

'If I get kidnapped, who will take care of my son?': Crime is thriving in #Ethiopia's war-torn #Amhara region

Since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023 between the #Fano, an Amhara nationalist militia, and the Ethiopian army, kidnappings and abuses have become rampant, especially around #Bahir_Dar, the regional capital.

Every day, Dereje (names have been changed) drives the streets of Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara region in northwestern Ethiopia, in his blue and white "bajaj" – an iconic three-wheeled taxi found in every city across the country. The demanding job barely allows him to provide for his wife and two daughters. "But at least I can be sure of coming home at night," he confided.

While city traffic can be chaotic, it is far less dangerous than the regional roads, where the threat of being robbed by militia members is constant. In September 2024, while traveling.....

#Op_ed: From Lifeline to Lost Legacy: How deliberate destruction of #cactus pear by former #TPLF-led admin in #Tigray devastates communities in Raya and Wejerat

This op-ed by The Raya Torch contends that #Raya and #Wejerat in Tigray long suffered “systematic political and economic exclusion under the previous regional governments led by the TPLF,” a “betrayal” that stripped communities of voice, opportunity, and infrastructure.

At the heart of this injustice, the article explains, lies the cactus pear, known locally as Beles or Kolahri—“a true pillar of life” that sustained livelihoods and ecosystems. Its destruction, the piece claims, was “a deliberate political act by the TPLF” to subdue dissenting communities.

According to The Raya Torch, annual losses from cactus fruit alone range from 30 to 92 billion birr, with cumulative losses estimated as high as 990 billion birr.

Salsay Weyane #Tigray accuses federal government of fuelling tensions, warns ‘renewed conflict is looming’

#Salsay_Weyane Tigray has accused the Government of #Ethiopia of deepening political tensions with Tigray by refusing to implement the #Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA), warning that escalating rhetoric and “dangerous actions” are heightening the risk of a return to war.

In a new press release on Monday, the party said the Tigrayan people have “repeatedly called on the Government of Ethiopia to stabilize political tensions with Tigray and beyond through dialogue, not escalation,” but claimed those calls have gone unanswered.

“Instead of responding positively, the government has intensified its refusal to implement the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement,” the statement said, adding that the growing “propaganda of war” by civil and military officials on ...
