News: #Ethiopia accuses #Eritrea of territorial violations, armed-group support, reaffirms Assab as strategic priority, warns military restraint is limited

Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of supporting armed groups operating inside its territory and violating its sovereignty, while reaffirming that secure access to the #Assab Port remains a strategic national priority.

Ethiopia also warned that its military restraint in the face of what it described as “serious provocations” is “not indefinite or unconditional.”

The remarks were delivered on 13 November 2025 by Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Gedion Timothewos (PhD), at the Foreign Policy Forum co-organized by Horn Review and Addis Ababa University, where he provided a detailed assessment of the historical and contemporary roots of Ethio-Eritrean tensions and outlined Ethiopia’s ...

#Ethiopia confirms #Marburg Virus after #Hemorrhagic Fever outbreak in Southern Ethiopia

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the hemorrhagic fever reported in Jinka, Southern Ethiopia Regional State, was caused by the Marburg virus, following genomic testing conducted at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (#EPHI) National Reference Laboratory.

In a statement issued this evening, the Ministry noted that laboratory analysis identified the virus as belonging to a lineage similar to strains previously detected in other East African countries.

The statement added that a multidisciplinary rapid response team has been dispatched to the area, where surveillance, contact tracing, case isolation and treatment, as well as community awareness activities, are underway. The national and regional Public Health Emergency Incident Management System has also been activated to coordinate ongoing response efforts.

Mass killings #probe in #Sudan will hold culprits to account, vows #UN

The UN human rights council has given unanimous backing to a fresh, independent investigation into mass killings reported in the Sudanese city of el-Fasher.

"Our wake-up calls were not heeded. Bloodstains on the ground in el-Fasher have been photographed from space. The stain on the record of the international community is less visible, but no less damaging," UN human rights chief Volker Türk said at an emergency meeting in Geneva on Friday.

Since the civil war began over two years ago, more than 150,000 people have been killed and about 12 million have been forced from their homes.

The new investigation is mandated to identify those who ordered and carried out the massacre in el-Fasher.

The findings could be shared with the International Criminal Court.

While Türk did warn individuals and companies "fuelling and profiting" from Sudan's war, there is disappointment that the mandate makes no mention of other countries sponsoring the conflict.

The UAE is accused of shipping weapons to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, while Iran has been accused of supplying some weapons to the Sudanese army.

#South_Africa investigates mystery of a plane that arrived with more than 150 Palestinians from #Gaza

South Africa’s intelligence services are investigating who was behind a chartered plane that landed in Johannesburg with more than 150 Palestinians from war-ravaged Gaza who did not have proper travel documents and were held onboard on the tarmac for around 12 hours as a result, the country’s president said Friday.

The plane landed Thursday morning at O.R. Tambo International Airport, but passengers were not allowed to disembark until late that night after immigration interviews with the Palestinians found they could not say where or how long they were staying in South Africa, South Africa’s border agency said.

It said the Palestinians also did not have exit stamps or slips that would normally be issued by Israeli authorities to people leaving Gaza.

The actions of South African authorities ..

#Egyptians criticise renaming of state TV channel over similarity to #Ethiopian network

A decision by Ahmed El-Meslemany, head of Egypt’s National Media Authority, to change the name & logo of the state television channel #Nile_TV International to Egypt News Network (#ENN) has sparked widespread criticism and discontent.

On Thursday, the National Media Authority announced a plan to update Nile TV International, introducing a new logo featuring the initials ENN, along with changes to the channel’s design and programming.

The new name, however, has been widely criticised, particularly because it is identical to an Ethiopian channel that already operates on various social media platforms.

Commentators described the move as “choosing names without study or effort, as happened before when programme names were announced and later withdrawn” after it became clear they duplicated existing ones

#Op_ed: Navigating Betrayal, Defending Autonomy: Quadrant alignment imperiling #Tigray’s survival, sovereignty

In this op-ed, Mulugeta Gebregziabher warns that recent clashes along the Tigray–#Afar border threaten to undermine the fragile peace established by the 2022 #Pretoria Agreement. He contends that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration is conducting a coordinated “quadrant” campaign—military, political, media, and diplomatic—to weaken the #TPLF, #TDF, and the Tigray Interim Administration.

At the core of this pressure, the author claims, is Abiy’s pursuit of “absolute authority,” driven by a “monarchical ambition” incompatible with Tigray’s autonomy. The region now exists in a “twilight zone,” committed to peace yet compelled to defend itself.

Mulugeta emphasizes that “the coordinated assault on Tigray seems … well-funded and multi-dimensional,” describing the quadrant as a “political cudgel” that “must be exposed, resisted, and dismantled.”
