#Egyptians criticise renaming of state TV channel over similarity to #Ethiopian network
A decision by Ahmed El-Meslemany, head of Egypt’s National Media Authority, to change the name & logo of the state television channel #Nile_TV International to Egypt News Network (#ENN) has sparked widespread criticism and discontent.
On Thursday, the National Media Authority announced a plan to update Nile TV International, introducing a new logo featuring the initials ENN, along with changes to the channel’s design and programming.
The new name, however, has been widely criticised, particularly because it is identical to an Ethiopian channel that already operates on various social media platforms.
Commentators described the move as “choosing names without study or effort, as happened before when programme names were announced and later withdrawn” after it became clear they duplicated existing ones

#Op_ed: Navigating Betrayal, Defending Autonomy: Quadrant alignment imperiling #Tigray’s survival, sovereignty
In this op-ed, Mulugeta Gebregziabher warns that recent clashes along the Tigray–#Afar border threaten to undermine the fragile peace established by the 2022 #Pretoria Agreement. He contends that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration is conducting a coordinated “quadrant” campaign—military, political, media, and diplomatic—to weaken the #TPLF, #TDF, and the Tigray Interim Administration.
At the core of this pressure, the author claims, is Abiy’s pursuit of “absolute authority,” driven by a “monarchical ambition” incompatible with Tigray’s autonomy. The region now exists in a “twilight zone,” committed to peace yet compelled to defend itself.
Mulugeta emphasizes that “the coordinated assault on Tigray seems … well-funded and multi-dimensional,” describing the quadrant as a “political cudgel” that “must be exposed, resisted, and dismantled.”

#KEFI moves towards launch of #Tulu_Kapi gold project
KEFI Gold and Copper PLC says it is on course to break ground at its Tulu Kapi project by the end of next year, marking what could be a turning point for Ethiopia’s emerging mining sector.
The company confirmed that its full development plan for the high-grade gold deposit has now been agreed upon by the project syndicate, clearing the way for construction once the remaining financial steps are completed.
Speaking at the MINTEX Ethiopia conference over the weekend, Harry Anagnostaras-Adams, KEFI’s executive chairman, told an audience that included Ethiopia’s minister for mines, lenders, and local investors that the groundwork for launch is essentially complete.
The company has now finalized the project’s $340 million budget, a sizable package for a country looking to expand its minerals industry.
Debt facilities, fully approved, will contribute $240 million to the project. Equity proposals have exceeded the remaining $100 million target, giving KEFI room to fine-tune the balance of investors.
The next steps are procedural but important. KEFI expects to spend one week optimizing the equity structure and another week completing the remaining documentation needed to close the financing.
The company is also aiming to bring in both public and private Ethiopian investors using local currency and is preparing the ground for a future stock exchange listing of its Ethiopian subsidiary.
A Memorandum of Intent outlining these commitments has been signed by all major stakeholders, including federal and regional authorities, lenders, the sovereign wealth funds of Ethiopia and Oromia, local contractors, and the project’s charitable foundation.
With the framework agreed, KEFI plans to escalate development activities, starting with community housing and early work on processing plant infrastructure.
The company is also looking at whether excess local capital could help accelerate long-term plans such as underground mine development, regional exploration, and community programs.

Ethiopian Investment Holdings (#EIH) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RUSAL, one of the world’s largest producers of low-carbon aluminium, to advance plans for the establishment of a large-scale aluminium smelter plant in Ethiopia. The agreement was concluded last week.
The proposed facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 500,000 metric tons, positioning Ethiopia as a competitive supplier to both regional and global aluminium markets. The project is aimed at meeting growing domestic demand, supporting industrial development, and significantly reducing foreign currency outflows currently spent on aluminium imports.

#UN Security Council votes to endorse Donald #Trump’s #Gaza plan
The resolution, which includes references to an independent Palestine, was passed by a vote of 13-0 with China and Russia abstaining
The UN Security Council has endorsed proposals put forward by Donald Trump for a lasting peace in Gaza, including the deployment of an international stabilisation force and a possible path to a sovereign Palestinian state.
The resolution, passed by a vote of 13-0 with abstentions by #China and #Russia, charted “a new course in the Middle East for Israelis and Palestinians and all the people of the region alike”, the US envoy to the UN, Mike Waltz, told the council chamber.
The inclusion of references to an independent Palestine was the price the US paid for backing from the Arab and Islamic world, who are expected to provide peacekeepers for an international stabilisation force (ISF).

#Commentary: From Performance to Proof: #Ethiopia’s turn to translate climate promises into measurable change at #COP32
Last week, Ethiopia was selected to host COP32 in #Addis_Abeba in 2027. Tsegaye Nega argues this opportunity carries serious risk, cautioning that Ethiopia is entering a process “engineered to reward appearances rather than delivery.”
He states that #UN climate finance remains trapped in symbolism, favoring large projects and high-profile pledges that reward “visibility over impact.” This, the author contends, obscures Ethiopia’s most effective climate intervention: a full transition to clean cooking, a $72 billion annual blind spot.
To escape this optics trap, Tsegaye urges Ethiopia to use its “thin window of agency” to shift from performance to proof. “The world will come to Addis Abeba expecting another performance,” he writes; “Ethiopia must deliver a verdict... that bends... the trajectory of the global climate.”
