In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry said one person tested positive for Marburg out of nine laboratory samples analyzed.

#Ethiopia: amid rising humanitarian needs in #Amhara, 77,000 people in Lalibela regain access to safe water

In parts of the Amhara region, essential services are under strain due to armed conflict. As it continues supporting people in hard-to-reach areas, the International Committee of the Red Cross (#ICRC) this Tuesday inaugurates its largest solar-powered water supply project in Africa.

A new system will provide reliable access to safe water for an estimated 77,000 residents in #Lalibela, a town renowned for its 12th-century rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This water project was launched over three years ago to address severe water shortages in the town, due to the then raging hostilities in northern Ethiopia & to unreliable power supply.

“We are glad that Lalibela’s residents can finally get stable access to water, after prolonged, intense works together with the local and regional water ...

#Op_ed: Arithmetic of Waiting: Why #Somaliland deserves independence, #Somalia must let go with grace

“For thirty-five years, Somaliland has existed as a state in every form but name, peaceful, orderly, and functional, yet unrecognized,” writes Mohamud A. Ahmed. He questions how long Somaliland must wait for Somalia to find coherence, noting that indefinite waiting is “neither moral nor political.”

The author frames Somaliland’s journey as one of quiet endurance, marked by “unresolved trauma” and what he calls an “arithmetic of waiting” that has endured for more than three decades.

Ahmed calls on Somalia to treat Somaliland as an equal neighbor, stating, “It is time to let Somaliland breathe, not as a rebellion against unity, but as an act of liberation for truth itself.”

#Ethiopia: Thousands raped and attacked in #Amhara conflict, BBC report indicates

Thousands of people have been subjected to rape and sexual violence in Ethiopia’s Amhara region since the outbreak of armed conflict, according to an investigation by the BBC, which cited data it collected from health facilities and medical sources between July 2023 and May 2025.

Access for independent media to the region remains heavily restricted, but a BBC Nairobi team gathered testimonies from rape survivors and healthcare professionals to document what it described as the human cost of the crisis.

While the full scale of conflict-related sexual violence is unknown due to underreporting and lack of formal investigations, the BBC said data it obtained indicate that thousands of people, aged between eight and 65, were raped between July 2023 and May 2025.

Drawing on information from 43 health stations and medical sources in ...

News: #University students protest mandatory one-year national service, say policy unjustly prolongs study period

University students across #Ethiopia have launched protests against a newly introduced directive by the Ministry of #Education requiring all students who enrolled from the 2026/27 academic year onward to undertake one year of national service. Students argue the policy will unnecessarily prolong their study period and impose additional burdens.

Demonstrations that began early this week have spread across several campuses, with students saying the requirement “burns student time for no justifiable reason” and adds to what they describe as a pattern of “student-harming directives” issued by the ministry.

Students from #Ambo University & #Arsi University, who spoke to Addis Standard, confirmed that the central grievance relates to what they view as the extension ..

#Trump announces #US making new effort to end war in #Sudan, citing #MBS request

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the U.S. would immediately start a new effort to end the conflict in Sudan, saying he was acting at the urging of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who met with him at the White House on Tuesday.

"His Majesty would like me to do something very powerful having to do with Sudan. It was not on my charts to be involved in that," Trump said during remarks at a U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum at the Kennedy Center where MBS, as he's known, was present.

A group of nations, led by the U.S., put forward a truce that the RSF agreed to in early November. Around that time, Sudan's ambassador to the United States Mohamed Abdalla Idris, said that they "appreciate the American proposals, and the government is studying it."

Trump's announcement Wednesday signals that his administration, and possibly even the president personally, would make a renewed effort at ending the conflict.

"I thought it was just something that was crazy and out of control. But I just see how important that is to you and to a lot of your friends in the room, Sudan and we're going to start working in Sudan," Trump added.

Victims were detained in horrific conditions in Libyan camps, where numerous people are said to have died, according to witness accounts. Daily life reportedly involved constant beatings, torture, and sexual violence.

Prosecutors say relatives of victims living in the #Netherlands were extorted. The journeys by sea from Libya to Italy were life-threatening. The same applied to the overland route, ...

News: #Tigray Interim Administration unable to fully implement new federal civil service salary adjustment due to severe budget deficit

The Tigray Plan Commission says the region is unable to implement the newly announced federal civil service salary adjustment in full, citing a severe budget shortfall that leaves the interim administration without the resources required to cover the increased wage bill, according to local media report.

In August, Federal authorities approved a revised salary scale for civil servants, effective September 2025.

However, Tigray Plan Commission Commissioner Hansa Teklay says the region cannot immediately enforce the new adjustment due to both procedural requirements & a major funding gap.

“It asks 12 billion birr for this year. And what the federal government sent us is 4.8 billion birr. We have over 7 billion birr ...

#Book_Review: Between Euphoria and Ruin: Reflections on Befeqadu Hailu’s Lost in Transition

In this book review, Eyasped Tesfaye reflects on Befeqadu Hailu’s Lost in Transition, one of the few works to chronicle #Ethiopia’s turbulent past decade. Despite the difficulty of writing a balanced account in a polarized climate, he praises the book, noting that any disagreements reflect “genuine differences of perspective rather than partisan distortion.”

The reviewer highlights the book’s historical depth, analysis of ethno-federalism, and examination of disinformation, which he argues is “uniquely vulnerable” during transitions.

Eyasped regards the book as indispensable for its ability to “force a pause” and prompt readers to “reassess their positions,” inviting them to “imagine the institutional and civic work required to prevent future failures of transition.”

Addis Abeba- Population displacement continued across several Ethiopian regions, driven by a combination of conflict, insecurity, and recurrent natural hazards, according to the latest update from the Ethiopia Emergency Shelter and Non-Food Items (ES/NFI) Cluster.

The report indicates that the #Somali and #Tigray regions accounted for the largest share of movements, each representing around 35% of all recorded displacements. In the Somali Region, the surge was primarily attributed to severe flooding in the #Shabelle Zone, which the Cluster said has repeatedly uprooted communities along the river basin.

In Tigray, movements were mainly linked to earthquake impacts, particularly in northern areas, the report noted. It added that the region also saw a significant number of return movements, with families ...
