#Trump announces #US making new effort to end war in #Sudan, citing #MBS request

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the U.S. would immediately start a new effort to end the conflict in Sudan, saying he was acting at the urging of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who met with him at the White House on Tuesday.

"His Majesty would like me to do something very powerful having to do with Sudan. It was not on my charts to be involved in that," Trump said during remarks at a U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum at the Kennedy Center where MBS, as he's known, was present.

A group of nations, led by the U.S., put forward a truce that the RSF agreed to in early November. Around that time, Sudan's ambassador to the United States Mohamed Abdalla Idris, said that they "appreciate the American proposals, and the government is studying it."

Trump's announcement Wednesday signals that his administration, and possibly even the president personally, would make a renewed effort at ending the conflict.

"I thought it was just something that was crazy and out of control. But I just see how important that is to you and to a lot of your friends in the room, Sudan and we're going to start working in Sudan," Trump added.

20-years jail recommended for #Eritrean alleged to have led brutal migrant-smuggling ring

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) has recommended a 20-year prison sentence for 42-year-old Amanuel W., who is suspected of heading a major and brutally violent migrant-smuggling operation.

According to prosecutors, the Eritrean smuggled large numbers of compatriots from #Libya to #Europe and made a great deal of money from it. “In terms of scale and severity, this is an exceptional case,” said the prosecutor.

Victims were detained in horrific conditions in Libyan camps, where numerous people are said to have died, according to witness accounts. Daily life reportedly involved constant beatings, torture, and sexual violence.

Prosecutors say relatives of victims living in the #Netherlands were extorted. The journeys by sea from Libya to Italy were life-threatening. The same applied to the overland route, ...

News: #Tigray Interim Administration unable to fully implement new federal civil service salary adjustment due to severe budget deficit

The Tigray Plan Commission says the region is unable to implement the newly announced federal civil service salary adjustment in full, citing a severe budget shortfall that leaves the interim administration without the resources required to cover the increased wage bill, according to local media report.

In August, Federal authorities approved a revised salary scale for civil servants, effective September 2025.

However, Tigray Plan Commission Commissioner Hansa Teklay says the region cannot immediately enforce the new adjustment due to both procedural requirements & a major funding gap.

“It asks 12 billion birr for this year. And what the federal government sent us is 4.8 billion birr. We have over 7 billion birr ...

#Book_Review: Between Euphoria and Ruin: Reflections on Befeqadu Hailu’s Lost in Transition

In this book review, Eyasped Tesfaye reflects on Befeqadu Hailu’s Lost in Transition, one of the few works to chronicle #Ethiopia’s turbulent past decade. Despite the difficulty of writing a balanced account in a polarized climate, he praises the book, noting that any disagreements reflect “genuine differences of perspective rather than partisan distortion.”

The reviewer highlights the book’s historical depth, analysis of ethno-federalism, and examination of disinformation, which he argues is “uniquely vulnerable” during transitions.

Eyasped regards the book as indispensable for its ability to “force a pause” and prompt readers to “reassess their positions,” inviting them to “imagine the institutional and civic work required to prevent future failures of transition.”

News Analysis: National Dialogue moves hit “deadlock” on #Tigray, Deputy Chief Commissioner reveals

#Ethiopia’s National Dialogue Commission is facing a “deadlock” in its moves to advance consultations in the Tigray region due to unresolved issues between the federal government and regional actors, Deputy Chief Commissioner Hirut Gebreselasie told political parties during a forum held in Adama from 15–16 November 2025.

During the discussion, Hirut revealed that the involvement of the war-torn region of Tigray has been central to the Commission’s work since its inception. “It has been three and a half years that we have been engaged in this work. Not a single day has passed where the Tigray issue was not an item on our agenda,” she said.

However, Hirut acknowledged that progress stalled when underlying disputes between the federal government and Tigray authorities proved beyond the Commission’s mandate. “In the middle, we understood that there was a kind of deadlock...

News: Conflict, flooding, and earthquakes drive displacement across #Ethiopia

Addis Abeba- Population displacement continued across several Ethiopian regions, driven by a combination of conflict, insecurity, and recurrent natural hazards, according to the latest update from the Ethiopia Emergency Shelter and Non-Food Items (ES/NFI) Cluster.

The report indicates that the #Somali and #Tigray regions accounted for the largest share of movements, each representing around 35% of all recorded displacements. In the Somali Region, the surge was primarily attributed to severe flooding in the #Shabelle Zone, which the Cluster said has repeatedly uprooted communities along the river basin.

In Tigray, movements were mainly linked to earthquake impacts, particularly in northern areas, the report noted. It added that the region also saw a significant number of return movements, with families ...

#South_Africa says #US changed mind on G-20; White House denies it

This year’s host — South Africa — and next year’s host — the US — spent Thursday trading barbs over what exactly constituted participation in the conference.

But what read at times as a farcical diplomatic dispute over semantics underscored some of the deep divides plaguing this week’s meeting and threatening to undermine a preeminent global forum.

The heart of the controversy was a claim by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa that the US had reversed course and decided to participate in the G-20.

“We have received notice from the United States, a notice which we are still in discussions with them over, about a change of mind, about participating in one shape or form or other in the summit,” he said.

If true, it would represent a victory for Ramaphosa after US President Donald Trump announced his nation was boycotting the summit for the first time ever while reiterating false claims that South Africa is instigating a genocide against White Afrikaners.

But Trump administration officials denied that proposing Dillard attend the handover ceremony amounted to any retreat from Trump’s vow not to participate in the conference.

“The representative of the embassy in South Africa is simply there to recognize that the United States will be the host of the G-20,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday. “They are receiving that send off at the end of the event. They are not there to participate in official talks, despite what the South African president is falsely claiming.”

#WHO warns nearly 840 million women, one in three, have faced sexual or partner violence

Nearly 1 in 3 women worldwide, an estimated 840 million, have experienced partner or #sexual_violence in their lifetime, according to a landmark report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) and #UN partners.

The report highlights that in the past 12 months alone, 316 million women, or 11% of women aged 15 and older, were subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner.

For the first time, the study also estimates that 263 million women have experienced non-partner sexual violence since age 15, a figure experts say is significantly underreported due to stigma and fear.

The report warns that progress in reducing violence against women has been slow, with only a 0.2% annual decline over the past two decades, while funding for prevention programs has fallen. Vulnerable ...

#Op_ed: Technology of Freedom, Risk of Violence: Digital divide facing women in post-war #Tigray

This op-ed, written on behalf of GEMTigray, examines how #Ethiopia’s digital shift offers opportunity yet widens exclusion for women in war-affected Tigray. It explains that technology aids connection, education, and livelihoods, even as “digital progress has also deepened existing inequalities.”

Women use social media to document abuses and access online learning and mobile banking, showing that “digital tools, when accessible, can support recovery in war-torn societies.” But the same platforms expose them to harassment, cyberstalking, and AI-driven deepfakes; “AI-generated propaganda now fuels a new layer of harm.”

The piece also warns of a growing “AI divide,” worsened by damaged infrastructure and gender-blind policy.
