CAMEROON’S FATHER OF INDEPENDENCE
On 13 March 1959, the United Nations General Assembly agreed that France's colonization of Cameroon should end leading to Cameroonian independence on 1 January 1960. However, that would not have been possible without the brave actions of Cameroonian political leader and freedom fighter Ruben Um Nyobe, who stood up at the UN and called for the world to back Cameroon’s bid for independence, before being killed by French forces.

CHAD EXPELS GERMAN AMBASSADOR
Chad has expelled the German ambassador for showing a lack of respect. Gordon Kricke, who’d been in the post since 2021, was given 48 hours to leave. A brief government statement, on April 7th, said it was over his “impolite attitude” and a “non-respect of diplomatic practices”. The German Embassy claims it only found out via social media.
Kricke was critical of Chad’s military leader Mahamat Idriss Derby who seized power in 2021 after the death of his father and president, Idriss, who’d ruled the country for 30 years. Elections were promised within 18 months but have been pushed back to 2024, after deadly anti-government protests.
News Agency AFP reported Kricke had been “interfering too much” in the governance of the country and had made “divisive remarks”, according to an anonymous government source.

Thousands took part in Meskel Square, Addis Ababa, to help millions displaced by the Tigray conflict and a years-long drought in the south of the country. Around a third of Ethiopia's population is Muslim and the head of Ethiopia’s Islamic Supreme Council urged them to continue their generosity after Ramadan

EASTER SURPRISE
Spain’s Semana Santa procession can be a bit of a shocker the first time you see it. The Easter festival features costumes that closely resemble those worn by the infamous Ku Klux Klan - a white supremacist cult that’s carried out brutal and deadly acts of violence against African-Americans in the United States. Semana Santa goes back hundreds of years and has nothing to do with the KKK - but it still trips and triggers social media every year.
What do you think? Is the resemblance too close for comfort?

ZUMA: REBUILD WORLD ORDER BRICK BY BRICS
South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma turns 81 today. His tenure was marred by corruption allegations, and he recently served time for refusing to testify. But while in office, he made some powerful remarks about how Africa was re-defining its place in the world - and the world order along with it. In particular, he championed organisations like BRICS - a club of emerging markets to which SA belongs - as viable alternatives to Western ones, such as the IMF and World Bank, and their ‘paternalistic’ finance capital.

Yoo Telegraph we fixed your headline for you!
Right-wing British newspapers like The Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail love nothing more than whitewashing (excuse the pun) Britain's historical crimes, whether they are related to slavery or colonialism. On this occasion, right-wing commentator Daniel Hannan made the case that Britain should stop apologising for slavery. There is only one problem. Britain has never apologised for slavery! In fact, it was the slave owners, not the enslaved, who were compensated when Britain ended the industrial-scale human trafficking of Africans to the Americas in 1838.
Slavery was the foundation of Britain's economic success. The transatlantic slave trade was the foundation of its industrial revolution, which turned the country into one of the world's wealthiest. It's important to recognise capitalism's rise was built on the exploitation and oppression of enslaved African people. These are facts whether the Telegraph wants to admit them or not!
