WHEN CAIRO CALLED OUT AMERICA
American leaders have promised more economic aid for African countries. But is it a good thing? Former Egypt president Nasser certainly didn’t think so in a fiery speech in Cairo in the 1960s. He said his country’s independence is worth far more than any trade deal, after a dispute with the U.S. ambassador.

CAMEROON’S FATHER OF INDEPENDENCE
On 13 March 1959, the United Nations General Assembly agreed that France's colonization of Cameroon should end leading to Cameroonian independence on 1 January 1960. However, that would not have been possible without the brave actions of Cameroonian political leader and freedom fighter Ruben Um Nyobe, who stood up at the UN and called for the world to back Cameroon’s bid for independence, before being killed by French forces.

CHAD EXPELS GERMAN AMBASSADOR
Chad has expelled the German ambassador for showing a lack of respect. Gordon Kricke, who’d been in the post since 2021, was given 48 hours to leave. A brief government statement, on April 7th, said it was over his “impolite attitude” and a “non-respect of diplomatic practices”. The German Embassy claims it only found out via social media.
Kricke was critical of Chad’s military leader Mahamat Idriss Derby who seized power in 2021 after the death of his father and president, Idriss, who’d ruled the country for 30 years. Elections were promised within 18 months but have been pushed back to 2024, after deadly anti-government protests.
News Agency AFP reported Kricke had been “interfering too much” in the governance of the country and had made “divisive remarks”, according to an anonymous government source.
