Continued - THE BRICS TRAIN ROLLS ON WHILE US HAS ITS HEAD IN THE SAND

Former President Trump admitted the biggest American export is the dollar, but BRICS nations have an interest in escaping a system heavily weaponized against them. Russia is under sanctions, and has hundreds of billions of its dollar reserves frozen. So is China, which is struggling to shake off a Washington containment policy. Meanwhile, Iran is stubbornly following its own path and refuses to be dictated to.

American macroeconomic policies add fuel to fire. The US is currently trying to bring down inflation, which means a hike in interest rates. For dollar debtors, this translates to more expensive debt servicing, eating into public and social spending. In a way, money printing and interest rate hikes are a way for the US to rob the global south using minimal force.

But BRICS offers an alternative and the empire has its head in the sand. More than 40 applications to BRICS are reported, and with an increasing share of global population and GDP the West-based order risks sliding into obscurity.

AFRICAN CURVES: ENVY OF 19TH-CENTURY EUROPEAN WOMEN?

The bustle dress was a very popular dress during the Victorian era. It was a fashion accessory for upper-class women. Even though this dress was integrated into the couture fashion industry during the 19th century, the origin of its design lies in a very dark past: the exploitation of African women’s bodies.

This dress design was inspired by the body features of Sarah Baartman, who was an enslaved Khoi Khoi woman from Cape Town, South Africa. She was displayed as a freak throughout her life in Europe and even after death because of these features.

It’s ironic that a woman whose body features and race, which was considered inferior, were the inspiration behind a fashion trend that once was a marker of wealth and European sophistication.

We've already reported on Gabon’s now-deposed Bongo dynasty’s relationship with Françafrique. But the family wasn’t just chummy with ex-coloniser France.

When it came to cozying up to the United States, papa Omar Bongo showed the way, and son Ali Bongo happily followed in his footsteps.

African Stream’s Inem Richardson digs deeper into Bongo links to W. Bush, Obama and NATO.

FARRAKHAN: BLACK SACRIFICE FORGOTTEN

Louis Farrakhan is a renowned civil rights activist and once led a million-man march in Washington DC.

He's also the leader of the Nation of Islam in America, which has been denounced as a hate group.

And on top of that, Farrakhan's been described as an anti-Semite and has been blocked on Facebook.

However, he continues to have a big audience and many Africans in America listen to him on important socio-political issues.

In 1994, in Texas, he delivered this passionate speech about the neglected history of Africans who died fighting the Nazi regime in World War II.

IS BRICS+ A VEHICLE FOR PEACE IN AFRICA?

The enlargement of BRICS to include two more African countries - Egypt and Ethiopia - could have profound consequences for our continent. Tensions have been high between the two nations.

Continued - IS BRICS+ A VEHICLE FOR PEACE IN AFRICA?

Firstly, there’s a spat over Ethiopia’s so-called Renaissance Dam, which Addis Ababa has just filled - and which Cairo regards as an existential threat, fearing Egypt could be left with insufficient access to fresh water. Secondly, there’s Sudan’s civil conflict - with Egypt backing the Sudanese army and Ethiopia supporting the RSF paramilitary. The fact that both countries were invited into BRICS suggest some behind-the-scenes reconciliation could be at play. So argues African Stream’s CEO Ahmed Kaballo, who was recently a guest on The Grayzone to discuss these matters. In this clip, he points to the recent Chinese-brokered detente between Iran and Saudi Arabia. The latter two countries were also invited into the expanded BRICS club (to which China, of course, already belongs) - and surely wouldn’t have been, had they not made up. Have a watch and let us know if you agree that BRICS+ might be a force for good as far as Africa is concerned.

GLOBAL HYPOCRISY ON CLIMATE CHANGE

The first ever Africa Climate Summit just wrapped up in Nairobi. But as African leaders sat around the table talking, the relentless extraction of African resources carried on apace - all to meet the appetite of industrialised nations outside the continent.

Africa’s biggest resource customers have been banging the go-green drum at us the hardest, hypocritically devouring our resources while urging us to forgo certain types of industrialisation for the ‘good of the planet.'

Take the EU for example. It’s mulling sanctions on South African exports due to coal links. At the same time, Germany is dismantling a wind farm to access the coal underneath.

Europe also wants to guzzle Africa’s oil, all the while preaching the necessity of cutting emissions to meet targets. Yet nothing about climate reparations or tech assistance for green industrialisation is ever put on the table.

While climate change is an existential threat to millions of Africans, they have contributed the least in terms of pollution. Richer nations have pledged $100 billion in climate finance annually to poorer countries but have so far failed to meet that target.

REMEMBERING STEVE BIKO

On September 12th, 1977, Steve Bantu Biko, one of South Africa’s most illustrious anti-apartheid icons, died in a cold Pretoria prison hospital cell. Another brilliant light put out by the brutal apartheid regime.

But by the time of his death, at just 30 years old, Biko had left his mark on South African politics. He founded the Black Consciousness Movement (BMC) which aimed to liberate the minds of Black people from apartheid propaganda which constantly told them they were inferior to White people.

However, his activism eventually put him in the racist regime’s crosshairs. He was arrested on August 18th, 1977, in Eastern Cape province and detained by the notorious ‘security’ branch of the apartheid police force.

On September 6th, while being interrogated, Biko suffered a brain haemorrhage after being severely beaten by officers. He was left naked and chained to the cell door.

Continued - Remembering Steve Biko

On September 11th, his condition deteriorated and instead of taking him to hospital, police transported him to a Pretoria prison. It was a journey of more than 700 kilometres that he endured chained in the back of a pickup truck. Within hours of his arrival he died.

Anticipating a massive backlash, the apartheid government said Biko’s death was due to a hunger strike. That lie was retracted after an inquest - conducted due to international pressure - concluded his death was caused by the police beating.

Biko’s shocking death sparked outrage across South Africa and beyond. More than 20,000 people turned up for his funeral in his hometown of King Williams Town.

The country was robbed of a future leader who would have played a key role in the post-apartheid South Africa, a country he was so passionate about.

In his memory, we’ve selected this clip where he speaks about the South Africa he envisioned.

In this prophetic speech, Biko warned if racist economic structures were not dismantled, the majority of Blacks would remain trapped in poverty - even after the fall of apartheid.

Some fifty years later, Biko’s words ring true. In today’s South Africa, White people still hold over two-thirds of the country’s wealth, despite making up less than 10 per cent of the population.

ETHIOPIA FILLS CONTENTIOUS MEGA DAM

Ethiopia has completed the filling of Africa’s largest dam - despite strong objections from Egypt and Sudan.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is more than a mile long and the continent’s biggest hydroelectric project.

Addis Ababa says it will double the country’s energy supply and give electricity to half of its population for the first time.

However, Egypt and Sudan lie downstream and fear its construction could restrict the flow of the Nile on which they heavily depend.

Egypt gets 97 per cent of its water needs from the river, and says the filling of the dam is “illegal” and an existential threat.

Previously Cairo proposed filling it over a ten-year period, but Ethiopia wanted to do in half that time.

Just two weeks ago all three countries resumed negotiations on the best way forward, but Cairo warns those talks are now in jeopardy.

Sudan's government has yet to comment.

One of Morocco’s historically significant sites has been badly damaged by the earthquake.

These are before and after pictures of the Tinmel Mosque in the High Atlas mountains.

The unique earth-and-stone structure has partially collapsed, with large piles of debris strewn on the ground. It was built in the 12th century where the Almohad dynasty established its first capital in a remote valley, before becoming one the biggest empires in Africa.

The old city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was also badly damaged. So far, more than 2,800 people have died as rescue teams continue to search for survivors.

IRAN TO HELP BUILD BURKINA FASO OIL REFINERY

Iran has agreed to help Burkina Faso build an oil refinery. The nations have been moving closer together in other spheres as well recently - with agreements on sharing military technology, as well as on opening air links between Tehran and Ouagadougou.

Burkina Faso has been working hard lately to assert its sovereignty on the world stage. Neo-colonialism has long transformed African countries into exporters of raw materials and importers of finished and refined goods.

A new oil refinery to export African petroleum to the world fits in with Ouagadougou‘s wider mission to break neocolonialism’s hold on Burkina Faso and Africa.

The great Tupac Shakur - rapper, actor and activist - died on this day, 27 years ago.

There’s no better tribute than his own music. In this clip, he delivers an ‘unplugged’ rendition of his classic ‘Keep Ya Head Up’ - performed in the intimate setting of a classroom of students.

And what an education the lyrics are. The song’s message - about respect for women and female empowerment - still packs a punch.

Tupac had a knack like no other for representing his community’s struggles, for giving a voice to marginalised Africans in America.

A true music revolutionary, he deserves not just to be remembered for his controversial death but also celebrated for his life and the passion of his lyrics and art.

Rest in power, brother.

LIBYA FLOODING KILLS THOUSANDS

Thousands are dead or missing after a massive storm smashed northeast Libya. Two dams collapsed near the coastal city of Derna which was hit by catastrophic flooding. It's reported entire neighbourhoods were swept into the sea. The death toll stands at over 6,000 and climbing, while over 10,000 are missing. Derna morgues are already full, with bodies left outside. Eight months worth of rain fell in just a few hours with little warning given to residents. Several other cities were badly affected, including Benghazi.

Experts say the storm grew from a strong low pressure in the Mediterranean which turned into a powerful cyclone. Flags are flying at half-mast in Tripoli as aid from western Libya and outside the country starts to arrive.

However, the international response has been underwhelming compared to the help offered to earthquake-hit Morocco. Libya has little capacity to deal with the crisis, after a civil war broke out following the bombing of the country in 2011.

TUPAC: WHY YOUR NAME MATTERS

On September 13th, 1996, we lost a great warrior. Tupac Amaru Shakur joined the ancestors while leaving a lasting mark on the culture - and the struggle. Tupac was more than just a rapper, he was an activist committed to African liberation in America. He came from a long line of dedicated African revolutionaries, from his mother Afeni Shakur, who was a member of the Black Panther Party, to his stepfamily/god family, which included revolutionaries such as Mutulu and Assata Shakur. His political evolution was natural. While in high school, he developed his talents as a conscious rapper while receiving political education from the Young Communist League in Baltimore. Following in his family footsteps, Tupac embarked on an African nationalist pathway at 18, joining the New Afrikan Panther Party. They fought for community control and against violent police while advocating for the release of political prisoners.

NIGER: FRANCE READYING TO ATTACK

Niger is warning of an attack by France. It claims Paris has deployed men and gear to nearby West African countries - including a warship now allegedly docked in Benin, which has prompted Niamey to cut military cooperation with Porto-Novo.

The coup in Niger is over a month old and enjoys popular support on the ground. Regional bloc ECOWAS - with the backing of France - early on threatened to intervene militarily if the coup wasn’t reversed, but so far hasn’t acted, though it’s standby force has been activated.

Any war - with or without French boots on the ground - would have catastrophic and far-reaching consequences for the region. Burkina Faso and Mali have vowed to treat any attack on Niger as an attack on themselves.
