Firstly, there’s a spat over Ethiopia’s so-called Renaissance Dam, which Addis Ababa has just filled - and which Cairo regards as an existential threat, fearing Egypt could be left with insufficient access to fresh water. Secondly, there’s Sudan’s civil conflict - with Egypt backing the Sudanese army and Ethiopia supporting the RSF paramilitary. The fact that both countries were invited into BRICS suggest some behind-the-scenes reconciliation could be at play. So argues African Stream’s CEO Ahmed Kaballo, who was recently a guest on The Grayzone to discuss these matters. In this clip, he points to the recent Chinese-brokered detente between Iran and Saudi Arabia. The first ever Africa Climate Summit just wrapped up in Nairobi. But as African leaders sat around the table talking, the relentless extraction of African resources carried on apace - all to meet the appetite of industrialised nations outside the continent.
Africa’s biggest resource customers have been banging the go-green drum at us the hardest, hypocritically devouring our resources while urging us to forgo certain types of industrialisation for the ‘good of the planet.'
Take the EU for example. It’s mulling sanctions on South African exports due to coal links. At the same time, Germany is dismantling a wind farm to access the coal underneath.
Europe also wants to guzzle Africa’s oil, all the while preaching the necessity of cutting emissions to meet targets. Yet nothing about climate reparations or tech assistance for green industrialisation is ever put on the table.

On September 12th, 1977, Steve Bantu Biko, one of South Africa’s most illustrious anti-apartheid icons, died in a cold Pretoria prison hospital cell. Another brilliant light put out by the brutal apartheid regime.
But by the time of his death, at just 30 years old, Biko had left his mark on South African politics. He founded the Black Consciousness Movement (BMC) which aimed to liberate the minds of Black people from apartheid propaganda which constantly told them they were inferior to White people.
However, his activism eventually put him in the racist regime’s crosshairs. He was arrested on August 18th, 1977, in Eastern Cape province and detained by the notorious ‘security’ branch of the apartheid police force.
On September 6th, while being interrogated, Biko suffered a brain haemorrhage after being severely beaten by officers. He was left naked and chained to the cell door.

On September 11th, his condition deteriorated and instead of taking him to hospital, police transported him to a Pretoria prison. It was a journey of more than 700 kilometres that he endured chained in the back of a pickup truck. Within hours of his arrival he died.
Anticipating a massive backlash, the apartheid government said Biko’s death was due to a hunger strike. That lie was retracted after an inquest - conducted due to international pressure - concluded his death was caused by the police beating.
Biko’s shocking death sparked outrage across South Africa and beyond. More than 20,000 people turned up for his funeral in his hometown of King Williams Town.
The country was robbed of a future leader who would have played a key role in the post-apartheid South Africa, a country he was so passionate about.
In his memory, we’ve selected this clip where he speaks about the South Africa he envisioned.

Ethiopia has completed the filling of Africa’s largest dam - despite strong objections from Egypt and Sudan.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is more than a mile long and the continent’s biggest hydroelectric project.
Addis Ababa says it will double the country’s energy supply and give electricity to half of its population for the first time.
However, Egypt and Sudan lie downstream and fear its construction could restrict the flow of the Nile on which they heavily depend.
Egypt gets 97 per cent of its water needs from the river, and says the filling of the dam is “illegal” and an existential threat.
Previously Cairo proposed filling it over a ten-year period, but Ethiopia wanted to do in half that time.
Just two weeks ago all three countries resumed negotiations on the best way forward, but Cairo warns those talks are now in jeopardy.
Sudan's government has yet to comment.

One of Morocco’s historically significant sites has been badly damaged by the earthquake.
These are before and after pictures of the Tinmel Mosque in the High Atlas mountains.
The unique earth-and-stone structure has partially collapsed, with large piles of debris strewn on the ground. It was built in the 12th century where the Almohad dynasty established its first capital in a remote valley, before becoming one the biggest empires in Africa.
The old city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was also badly damaged. So far, more than 2,800 people have died as rescue teams continue to search for survivors.

A true music revolutionary, he deserves not just to be remembered for his controversial death but also celebrated for his life and the passion of his lyrics and art.

LIBYA FLOODING KILLS THOUSANDS
Thousands are dead or missing after a massive storm smashed northeast Libya. Two dams collapsed near the coastal city of Derna which was hit by catastrophic flooding. It's reported entire neighbourhoods were swept into the sea. The death toll stands at over 6,000 and climbing, while over 10,000 are missing. Derna morgues are already full, with bodies left outside. Eight months worth of rain fell in just a few hours with little warning given to residents. Several other cities were badly affected, including Benghazi.
Experts say the storm grew from a strong low pressure in the Mediterranean which turned into a powerful cyclone. Flags are flying at half-mast in Tripoli as aid from western Libya and outside the country starts to arrive.
However, the international response has been underwhelming compared to the help offered to earthquake-hit Morocco. Libya has little capacity to deal with the crisis, after a civil war broke out following the bombing of the country in 2011.

On September 13th, 1996, we lost a great warrior. Tupac Amaru Shakur joined the ancestors while leaving a lasting mark on the culture - and the struggle. Tupac was more than just a rapper, he was an activist committed to African liberation in America. He came from a long line of dedicated African revolutionaries, from his mother Afeni Shakur, who was a member of the Black Panther Party, to his stepfamily/god family, which included revolutionaries such as Mutulu and Assata Shakur. His political evolution was natural. While in high school, he developed his talents as a conscious rapper while receiving political education from the Young Communist League in Baltimore. Following in his family footsteps, Tupac embarked on an African nationalist pathway at 18, joining the New Afrikan Panther Party. They fought for community control and against violent police while advocating for the release of political prisoners.

The coup in Niger is over a month old and enjoys popular support on the ground. Regional bloc ECOWAS - with the backing of France - early on threatened to intervene militarily if the coup wasn’t reversed, but so far hasn’t acted, though it’s standby force has been activated.

Local youths, who’re part of the ‘support committee and citizen vigil initiative’ stopped a van packed with pastries. So far, Niger’s attempts to get the 1,500 French troops to leave the country have failed. That’s despite axing water and electricity supplies to their barracks. Will this latest move cutting croissant supplies be the last straw for Paris? After seizing power this summer, Niger’s new government ended military accords with former coloniser France. It also told the French ambassador to pack his bags, although he’s also refusing to do so. The question is: do they have the stomach to stick around without their traditional flakey bread?
