Revolutionary icon Che Guevara was executed by the Bolivian army on this day in 1967.

According to Algerian President Ahmed Ben Bella, the Argentine saw Africa as imperialism's weak link.

He not only cared about bringing change to his own country or his second home, Cuba but wanted the entire Global South to be freed from colonialism. And that saw him take up the fight in Congo. Che Guevara went to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1964 to support the Simba rebellion. Guevara's involvement was at the request of Congolese rebels seeking assistance against the Western-backed neo-colonial government in Kinshasa. He provided military training and guidance to the rebels, aiming to help them fight against the forces that executed Congo's first Prime Minister, Patrice Lumumba, three years earlier.

After his time in the DRC, he moved to Tanzania, where he worked with the revolutionary government of Julius Nyerere, providing military training to Tanzanian forces to remove the remnants of the colonial and imperial influence in the region. Che invited revolutionary fighters from all over Africa to Tanzania to establish a revolutionary base for the continent's liberation.

He's a leader respected, revered and remembered in the hearts and minds of millions of Africans. Che saw the struggle in Africa as an integral part of the worldwide struggle against imperialism.

Here are some of his famous quotes, which are also unforgettable.

RUTO'S RISKY HAITI GAMBLE

Kenya’s president has defended his decision to send police to Haiti to fight gang violence and restore order. According to William Ruto, he’s running to help a Caribbean island that’s still suffering from the bitter legacy of colonialism. But isn’t that just clever spin? Ruto's actually rushing to meet the demands of Haiti’s former occupier, the USA. Here's our reaction to Ruto's dubious framing of the UN-backed mission.

IDI AMIN'S OBSESSION WITH ARABS

It’s less talked about than Chinese investment, but money from oil-rich Arab nations is also increasingly being pumped into African ventures. Uganda's former President, Idi Amin, was widely known to be obsessed with doing business with Arab countries instead of forging an economic alliance with African nations at home. In this clip, Amin is all but grovelling for Arab investors to make Africa, specifically Uganda, a key recipient of oil boom investments. Even though the more significant East African Community was already operational, General Amin focused his efforts on building strong alliances in faraway places. He argued that Arab investment into his country was critical, transforming it from an agricultural into an industrial exporter.

His reign in Uganda lasted from 1971, when he seized power from President Milton Obote to 1979 when Tanzanian troops and Ugandan rebels stormed Kampala and ousted him from power after he attempted to invade his neighbouring African country Tanzania. Amin fled first to Libya and then to Saudi Arabia, where he spent the rest of his life in exile.

MALEMA: UNITY ONLY WAY FOR AFRICA

Africa must unite! This is the message that Julius Malema, president of South Africa's Economic Freedom Fighters, never gets tired of preaching. In this video, he appeals to Africans to rally for a united continent with one government. He drives home the point that Africa can only become strong and a force on the global stage if its people united against those who steal its resources. These remarks were given on 29 July 2023 to a crowd of 100,000 people at the FNB Stadium in Soweto during his party's 10th anniversary celebration. Soweto is where the EFF was founded and where the 16 June 1976 massacre against school children took place under the apartheid regime.

PRAYER NOT A SOLUTION FOR AFRICA

It's been said that religion is the opium of the masses. That it disconnects disenfranchised people from the here and now, dulling their engagement in revolutionary politics. This form of religion has been pushed by the West in Africa, advancing the narrative that Africans will enjoy land flowing with milk and honey in the afterlife.

Since missionaries first set foot in Africa, the continent has been rocked by an explosion of religious figures claiming to be the solution to the myriad of the problems that people on the continent face. Whether it is poor economic performance, conflict or unemployment, they claim to have the answer. The reality is colonisers have used religion to pacify Africans. The masses have been told not to focus on injustices, despite the doctrines of all the major Abrahamic religions imploring their followers to fight against wrongdoing and exploitation in this life.

However, Pan-African scholar Professor P.L.O. Lumumba, says Africa's problems cannot be prayed away, but will only be resolved when Africans decide to take charge of their own destiny. Lumumba drew similarities with the Sahel, where people's movements have played a decisive role in booting Western-controlled governments that have failed to address people's concerns, including that of external actors' exploitation of their mineral resources.

Let us know what you think of the professor's remarks.

TOP 5 COUNTRIES WITH MOST AFRICANS OUTSIDE AFRICA

Have you ever thought about why some Africans live outside of the continent? In this video, we take a look at the top five countries with the largest populations of Africans outside Africa.

APARTHEID, A TALE OF TWO STRUGGLES!

It is easy to forget that those who deny what is happening in Palestine today is an apartheid; principally the United States government actually supported the apartheid regime of South Africa. Not only that, they designated the ANC a terrorist organisation and listed Nelson Mandela as a terrorist right until 2008.

Once again, the United States is on the wrong side of history and has rejected the assessments by Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem and international rights observers like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch that the Israeli authorities are subjecting the Palestinian people to apartheid, which under international law is a crime against humanity.

Continued…. APARTHEID, A TALE OF TWO STRUGGLES!

For more than 70 years, Palestine has resisted, while the US, feigning mediation, further entrenches Israel's occupation of Palestine. Palestine has now broken through the world's biggest concentration camp. Like clockwork, the West has provided cover for the ensuing indiscriminate, disproportionate attack against Gaza, not to mention dead silence on the years of abuse of Palestinians on a daily basis. As Africans with a history of colonisation and ongoing neo-colonisation, many of us share an affinity with the Palestinian cause, and several leading parties, such as South Africa's EFF and ANC, have added their voices to Global South calls for a just settlement of the Palestinian question. To end with a quote from Nelson Mandela himself, "We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians."

AFRICA’S ENGLISH LANGUAGE BARRIER

Young Pan-Africanist Ousman Touray is grabbing a lot of attention with his vision for the continent. And his work has seen him head a think-tank at Gambia University which analyses and debates policy. So, here’s his take on what should be done with African languages. They need to be cherished and promoted to become the continent’s official dialects.
After all, Chinese don’t need to speak English to pursue a career in medicine, but people from Gambia and Rwanda do. He uses Swahili being taught in East African schools as an example to follow. Listen to his arguments and give us yours.

WATCH: UK COPS UNLEASH DOG ON RAPPER MIST

Watch the moment UK rapper Mist is attacked by a police dog.

Bystanders filmed how British officers unleashed an aggressive German Shepherd while attempting to detain the Black rap artist, shouting “get on the floor now.” It’s unclear what led to the incident in Birmingham last week.

The debate over police brutality and accountability has reignited in the UK after the country’s home secretary was accused of interfering in a criminal prosecution. She made a series of comments on Twitter in response to a London police officer being charged with murder after he shot dead Chris Kaba, a 24-year-old unarmed Black man in South London.
