AFROCENTRICITY AND PAN AFRICANISM

In order to effectively embody the spirit of Pan-Africanism, there must be a philosophical base upon which ideas, interests, common culture and ideologies come together.

That is what Professor Molefi Asante said in this 19 October 1996 clip in a debate that took place with Pan-Africanist Kwame Ture at the University of Cincinnati (USA). He defended Afrocentricity because of the need for Africans to fully comprehend and centre their experiences within their own historical, cultural and sociological contexts. That is what he said is required for Pan-Africanism to be realized. The founder of the African-American Studies Program at Temple University in the United States reiterated that the spirit of Pan-Africanism is tied to a deep identity in Afrocentrism and a united African people reading from the same page.

Meanwhile, others in our community have rejected Afrocentricity as narrowminded.

ISRAEL IN AFRICA

Many African nations cut diplomatic and other ties with Israel after the 1973 Ramadan War (Yom Kippur War). But many factors - from the desire for Israeli agricultural and security technologies to various US-brokered deals (Camp David, Oslo, Abraham Accords) aimed at peace and normalisation - have seen most of Africa back on diplomatic talking terms with Tel Aviv. Even South Africa, which strongly sympathises with the Palestinian cause and regards Israeli actions as comparable to the apartheid regime’s, has an embassy in Tel Aviv, though Pretoria downgraded relations last year - and currently has no ambassador. Still keeping their backs turned are Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Somalia, and Tunisia. Could Israel’s current indiscriminate war against Gaza change the overall picture? Let us know in the comments.

MACRON: STOP ANTI-FRENCH PROPAGANDA

French President Emmanuel Macron does not believe Africans can think for themselves or act in their own best interests. He claimed on 1 September 2022 that the mass revolt against France unfolding throughout Africa is a product of "anti-French propaganda" created by Russia, China and Turkey. Here's a funny little idea: The rising movement against French intervention actually comes from a long history of devastation, poverty, violence, and warfare linked to the French colonial and neo-colonial systems. Maybe Macron should consider all of that.

We've covered extensively Kenya sending 1,000 police to Haiti as part of a UN-backed mission to 'restore' order.

And we believe Nairobi has willingly becoming the Black face of Western Imperialism. But in the comments, people are still asking why is this bad?

Well, maybe the armed forces are not just being sent to tackle gang violence.

History shows soldiers have repeatedly been sent to the Caribbean island to protect US interests. And we don't believe the latest move is much different.

So, here's a quick reminder of Haiti's turbulent history to clarify our point of view.

Haiti may seem a world away for many Africans, but there's a very good reason why we should care about its future. We owe the country a huge debt in its defeat of slavery.

So, when we hear its people reject continued foreign interventions and the misery they cause, we should listen.

Here's African Stream CEO Ahmed Kaballo laying out why Haiti should matter to us all.

FOREIGN AID DOES NOT HELP AFRICA

Africa is portrayed as corrupt by the West. But what is missed is that much of the corruption is enabled - if not actively encouraged - by the West. In fact, it’s Western greed for Africa’s resources that often drives this.

The point is well made in this clip from - perhaps surprisingly - a US investor working in Africa. Brad Rohrs notes that so-called aid for Africa is often nothing more than a way of disguising bribes for officials. Obviously depositing large amounts of cash into their bank accounts is going to trigger anti-money laundering security systems, but dress up the kickback as a bit of do-gooder charity and things are easier.

So next time you hear about African corruption, remember also how the West is deceptively securing favourable resource contracts!

WILL KING CHARLES ADMIT TO CRIMES?

Kenya’s set to host the United Kingdom's King Charles on a state visit later this month, but will he bring along one item Kenyans really want: A formal apology for crimes committed under colonial rule? The Kenyan people would like him to go beyond ‘acknowledging painful aspects of Britain’s past actions’ in the country. The monarch’s visit coincides with Kenya’s 60th anniversary of independence from British rule, which came after a brutal crackdown of the Mau Mau armed struggle for self-rule.

Continued - WILL KING CHARLES ADMIT TO CRIMES?

The Kenya Human Rights Commission estimates colonial authorities tortured, maimed or killed more than 90,000 Kenyans between 1952 and 1960. In 2013, the British government made a statement of regret over colonial abuses and paid £19.9m to 5,200 elderly victims. However, historian and international relations expert Professor Macharia Munene said in a television interview last week that the visit will be meaningless if King Charles fails to issue a formal apology. Like his mother’s visit to Kenya in 1952—when she lodged in the Treetops Hotel as Kenyans were shedding blood for their freedom—King Charles may well choose to soak in the honours while glossing over grave historical injustices.

Join the conversation and tell us what you think about calls for the British monarch to apologise for crimes of empire in Kenya.
